Had Mot, what is more important to get done first?
Hi guys
After a little help, I had my mot a few months back and the guy sais that it passed but a few advisery things to cherry pick at and not in need right away so looking at doing now, does anyone know what is most important to do first any possible cost in a garage?
002 front windscreen has damage to an area less that 10mm circle within zone 1 (8.3.1a)
003 nearside rear subframe mounting prescribed area is corroded but not considered excessive (2.4.a.3)
004 offside subframe mounting prescribed area is corroded but not considered excessive (2.4.a.3)
005 Nearside subframe mounting prescribed area is corroded but not considered excessive (2.4.a.3)
006 Nearside front macpherson strut has slight movement at the upper attachment (2.5.a.1c)
007 Exhause heat shield loose.
My car is a 03 reg ford ka, I also have a slight noise odd times when on the motoway and slowing to stop in traffic, it sounds like its going to stall noise but doesn't.
Also when going over speedbumps, pot holes slow it makes a bit of a rattle noise like an old bus, I know its an old car its self.
Would it be worth cherry picking at these now or possible going for a service?
I have had a car in the past where 3 main things went and they said it would cost about £2,000 but may not full get fixed and it was a old car only worth £500 so don't want to pay out for these things then find out not long after its going to cost a lot more for an old car which might be worth just scrapping for something else.
thanks

Rust.. leave it 5 minutes and it will be a problem sooner than you think.
Any play in a suspension part should be done immediately.

A service won't fix corrosion or your suspension. I had a 53 plate KA and last year it had advisories like yours for corrosion, I did nothing and this year it failed and needed loads of welding to get it through, I would get it sorted ASAP.
I used to get advisories for the McPherson struts every MOT, luckily my OH fixed them!

13yo Ka. Rot advisories on MOT... Colour me unsurprised. Don't spend on those things, just save towards the replacement. Cutting out the rot now will cost plenty, not much different to waiting until it fails the MOT next year or the year after - and won't do anything about all the other well-established rot that just hasn't been advised or failed yet.
The speedbump rattle will be the exhaust heat shield.0 -
thanks guys, it was Kwick Fit who did the mot.0

Tighten the strut up. Get a wire brush out and clean up the rust a bit . Next Mot take it somewhere else. You dont want to get involved in welding all that lot. I welded my VW camper van up every year for around 10 years somewhere or other but they never actually failed it unless holes were appearing. My welding was TBH appalling, thrown on using a Porta Pac gas welding kit but they always passed it. I doubt it actually strengthened anything up. The loose shocker may make the car wallow around a bit sometimes.0

I've had the same advisory about rusty brake hose connections each year for the last 10 years. It's still going fine, and stopping fine too.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0

If it were me, I'd do what I did to a colleague's Ka about 5 years ago. It was starting to rust underneath so I cleaned the whole lot up with a cup brush then undersealed it with a corrosion inhibiting stonechip using a schutz gun. It lasted two more years, sailing through MOTs, until it got written off by someone running a red light into it.
The noise you're experiencing is almost certainly the heatshield. 50p's worth of self tappers and repair washers should sort it.
Strut top mount might just need tightening at the mounts, or it could be the mount itself. Not a massive job, but worth doing.0 -

No a service wont fix it but they should have noticed the issues and warned the OP before they became advisories or worse.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Kwikfit are unlikely to have advised any of those if there was any reasonable grounds to fail for them at the moment.
Rust will keep rusting, but you can slow it down surprisingly well with a few cans of Dinitrol (or similar) wax. Personally I like their cavity wax even for underbody because it's very good indeed at soaking in to any rust you can't get at to remove. The aerosols are easy to apply, "self heal" if chipped by stones, and (in my experience at least) do stop rust pretty well for a couple of years even on bare metal under the floor. For something the size of a KA you should be able to do the whole underside with about 4 cans if you concentrate on the "bad" bits and just lightly spray the rest.
Heatshield will almost certainly be the rattle you hear. As suggested above, a handful of self-tappers and a drill will cure it. Do this before any waxing because (a) it'll be less messy and (b) when you spray the wax you can then spray it around the new screws and effectively stop them rusting too.
"Slight" play in a top mount may or may not need sorting - as others have said, they can stay like that for years. In fact, even a new one must have slight play or it'd be seized - it all depends on how you define "slight". From common reports KF are likely to have a "tighter" definition than many other places. If in doubt, get a local independent to have a quick look and advise if what you have is a normal level or not.0 -
Spraying wax onto the external underside won't stop - or even slow - the rot. It's coming from the inside to the outside. By the time you see it, there's !!!!!! all metal left.0
