Do you know what others will be wearing or if there is a suggested dress? A dark navy tie would be OK, but I think generally most funerals go for either nothing except black or any colour. So you could end up being the only one not with a black tie. Also a skinny black tie is cheap and simple.

Personally I am not a fan of mis-matched jacket and trousers, I feel a single colour suit might look better.
  • If you don't mind sartorial advice from strangers, stick with the suit (presuming it still fits) as a funeral tends to be a dressier event than a job interview.
I'm afraid a solid black tie is the respectful thing, but you can always have a grey tie in a trouser pocket. Or wrapped around one ankle, if pockets would "ruin the line".

Funerals can be very tough on the immediate relations, but are usually remembered fondly as an affirmation of the good stuff. If your phone has a good photo capability, you can "make copies" of any family snaps on display that you've not seen before. It's not usually considered a portrait opportunity.

I wore a charcoal suit today to my grans funeral with a plain white shirt and black tie , another family member had one of those cheap polyester ones and it looked awful as was really shiny , cant complain though he made an effort I suppose

  • I bought a dark grey M&S suit for my grandma's funeral in 1988. It still is the one and only suit I've ever owned.
