Hello All
Once again I am having issues with my new build flat. I am using 40kwh a day, sometimes more.
The flat is a newbuild, electric heating and electric immersion boiler. Now I know the obvious thing would be to point to the heating and boiler. However the consumption peaks overnight when the heating is off and the boiler is rated at 4kwh with boost enabled. 2kwh standard. Its on for two hours which makes 4-8kwh.
I have verified this as for the last 2 hours prior to me posting this I had the boiler running, cooker, extractor hood and I used 10Kwh.
Throughout the day at the weekend the consumption averages 0.5kwh per hour. Then overnight rockets to 1.5kwh.
I am tracking it on my phone but I am running out of ideas and its going to cost and absolute fortune.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

13,000kwh? In Electric?!!!!

How have you calculated your use? Have to used actual meter readings one year apart?
You can't just measure one days worth of high use and extrapolate for the whole year!
Please post all your recorded meter readings (no estimates) for the last year or more and the dates. Then we can work out your actual annual usage.0 -
For an all electric property that consumption does nt seem too bad. It will obviously lesson from April to October .For a dual fuel 3 bed property the average is 13000 kwhrs for gas and 3300 kwhrs for electric.0
-
The usage is calculated from actual readings, no estimates. I have become a little obsessed and have readings across different times of day. That is how I have tried to work out what each of the big appliances uses.0

I assume E7
The usuage will peak at night - thats what Electric Heating systems are designed to do as this is when the water is heated.
What is your night-time / daytime consumption ? It should be in the order of 40/60 or even more.
More details please of your installation - panel heaters / storage rads .......
Have you consumption - ACTUAL kwh not ESTIMATES for the last year. ?
As other replies - you cannot extrapolate a winters day over a yearNever pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
According to Ofgem figures the average annual KWH use for an all electric E7 flat are:
2800KWH Low User, 4600KWH Medium User, 7800KWH High User
So I would consider you an above average/high user. But I do not think you have calculated your annual figure correctly. You have guessed at what it might be based on what you are using daily during winter!
Whilst you are taking daily readings this does not mean anything when considering your annual figure.
For us to help you calculate an annual figure you need to look for two meter readings taken one year apart.
Post all your historical actual meter readings for the last year or more and we will help you calculate it.0 -
However, the description is of an electric boiler. To hobbgoblin, can you clarify, if you have an electric boiler with radiators, or storage heaters, or non-storage panel heaters.
Also what water heater do you have and what type of controller is it?
It is common for water heaters to be connected to the E7 night supply without a timer, they automatically come on overnight to heat the water. There may be a separate timer to allow additional heating during the day.
40 kWh per day in Winter is about right for an all electric flat. In fact, over the last month, my average has been 50 kWh per day - my electricity supplier have refused to accept this month's reading because "it must be wrong" - but in reality, this is not excessive consumption.0 -
In another thread the OP said he moved into the flat in October 2015.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0
-
So their only electric figures/cost is based on 4 months of winter use which is then being extrapolated for the whole year.
That is what I thought.
You will not use this amount all year! You will stop using your heating during late spring, summer and early autumn.
At the most I would expect you to use the top end of the average figures I posted above.
Use those figures in a comparison site. Get on to a cheap tariff. If you are E7, try to !!!! your usage towards the cheap hours.0 -
Above post is spot on. OP, if I understand correctly, you have night storage heaters, and an immersion heater (which is not a boiler). The whole point of this system is to charge the NSH's and heat the hot water tank overnight on cheap rate E7 power. So it is perfectly normal for your usage to peak overnight between about midnight and 7am. And remember that the overnight usage costs about one third per kWh than the day rate. What matters is not your total annual usage, but your usage on each register. Once the heating does go off in Spring, your only night usage will be the immersion heater. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
