Quoted For Truth - Albertross gave a perfectly reasonable to your response, told you how to fix your disk drives and make it faster - the things you were complaining about - but save you a bunch of money (this is MSE afterall..). Kinda uncool to have a go at people trying to help you...
Anyway, that having been said, I'd just look at the base units on ebuyer, scan etc, pick one that's around your budget and buy it. You'll get good value from those places, and 99% of the time spending more will get you a better box, spending less will get you a worse box. If you run out of hard disk space, just buy a 500gb external drive and start storing your pics on that.0 -
Heh, cracking response.
I would either
1) Upgrade as per Albertross said. Memory, maybe a new hard drive.
2) Clean up the system, as per Albertross said. Windows can suffer over time, a fresh install can make a world of difference.
3) Try installing Xubuntu (google it).
4) Buy an Apple (a MacBook, or iMac)
No problems with Dell in my opinion. Good pc's, good price, easily done over the internet."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
Hi all, Interesting posts and each one's interpretation of the posts. Anyway it says Ringo is on line now when I hover over green button. What does that mean to me? Can I talk to him when I see he is on line why does it say he is on line? Ringo could you pm with your specs please and where you got it and how much? sounds great to me just what I need and I don't need a monitor either and I would much prefer xp over vista but I do need a good printer. Thanks for all your input I am becoming more and more knowledgable day by day even if I can't spell and I can't download the speller as my sister's 10 year old pc will crash.0

If you want cheap prices, then unless you buy the components and build it yourself, then dell is the best bet. There are lots of other places that make PCs, as people have mentioned, but they are going to cost more.
Personally, my family have had 3 PCs and 2 laptops from Dell, all in perfect working order.0 -
iviv You cant even buy components and build a pc to the same spec as the dell systems for less anymore. Its just not worth the hassle. If you want somthing special to play games and do more than 90% of people want then yes its better to build your own but that isnt the case here.0

Taffyscot - i tend to leave MSE on a browser whilst I work.. so i'm online a lot I guess! you could just send me an instant message if you ever need too...
Anyhoo, my little Dell cost 280 quid (that included 40 for delivery) and it's got Windows XP media centre edition, 1GB of ram, it's one of their compact C521 (i think that's the case model), it has 160gb of hard disk space, DVD writer (+/-), a 256mb DVI out ATI graphics card and a 5.1 channel sound card. The processor is a dual core Athlon, total 4.4ghz (2.2 per chip).
I don't tend to play games, but when I do, Battlefield 2 plays rather well, graphics are good and it runs smooth. I do a lot of photo editing, this runs great (paintshop pro v8).
I really, honestly, don't understand why people pay more than 300 quid for a 'day to day' machine0 -

and I don’t think that mending a !!!!!!e@ disk drive will make a 4yr old PC work faster unless you know magic I don’t????
Dell? after they repeatedly messed up (polite version) and customer service (I think that’s what they called it) messed up my fathers computer and at least 2 others of people he works with I am no longer happy to get a PC from them....my choice surely?
It seems that this was not the place to ask for help? Well maybe not from you ? just don’t pop into the local library where I work and ask me to get you a book you really want....I may just lend you the Beano in a fancy dust cover!
What an ungrateful so and so you are.
It's people like you that puts people off helping others.
People offer excellent advice and you offer a nasty reply.
A CPU is just one of many micro-chips on a motherboard which is inside the base unit.
MSE is full of decent people, maybe you are right this isn't the place for you to ask. Maybe the problem isn't with these computer retailers or manufacturers when you hit upon problems, think the problem is closer to home. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
i also forgot to mention these guys they build fast Cheap machines & really know what threy are doing
overclockers0 -
What a rude and ungrateful woman.
Anyway, she should learn a little more about computing, which is a surprisingly easy subject to understand with only an hours research, or buy a new base unit from DELL with 4.5% cashback from Quidco.0 -

Given your requirements, you could consider this:
Zoostorm 2-3351 £249.95
or this
Area-51™ ALX £3,089.08
As you note, one is like budget fish fingers and one is like caviar. But you haven't said whether you want fish fingers or caviar?0
