  • One of my fav stories from when I was wee - I had the ladybird book version!
  • Being from the southern hemisphere, I have never heard this story, but boy, do I love it.:T:T:T

;) Felines are my favourite ;)
  • I had completely forgotten about this tale - THANK YOU - I am delighted to be reminded of it.

Also reminds me of the magic porridge pot... I loved Ladybird books when small.
    Put the kettle on. ;)

I've never heard this story before, but it's fab, thanks for sharing. :)

I'll have to ask my Mum & Dad if they know this story, and if so, why they never shared it with me. :(:rotfl:

I do know the "story" of making Pea & Ham soup from a chicken though... now that's clever. ;)

Just reading a book which talks about welfare orange juice. I think I can remember it - but can't find a piccie of it. I'm remembering a smallish brown glass bottle - is that right? I seem to remember running my finger round the edge of the bottle & licking it as my cruel mother wouldn't let me drink it undiluted :o. One of those memories where I can almost taste it :D
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

Since the only alternative was milk or water,it always seemed like a treat when we had some!

I remember having this as a child - in a small bottle (similar to a little milk bottle) with a silver peel off top. I don't remember having to dilute it though, I think you drank it straight from the bottle with a straw. It was nothing like the fresh Orange Juice you can get today however. I too have fond memories of it but it was probably nowhere near as nice as we are remembering! Thanks for the memory though gallygirl!

Oh yes I remember it too. I remember going to the clinic to collect it with my mum - a mobile clinic like a mobile library and the taste. It was yummy! A small medicine type bottle.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

It was around 1/- a bottle (5p) and was delicious ,unlike the Virol we were given at school. This was a huge jar of the sticky brown gunk that looked like sump oil  and every day we had to line up in alphabetical order to get a spoon of this stuff It was suppose to be healthy and full of vitamins. In my small village school on Blackheath there were one spoon to a class and in my class there were 42 pupils.Luckily my suname began with a 'B' so I was second to have a spoonful. If your surname began further down the alphabet maybe 20-30 kids before you had used the spoon. So colds were often passed on via the spoon. Why we only had one spoon per class I never did find out but if a child had a runny nose or was sneezing it often got passed on the the next child up the line. You had to have it whether you liked it or not. Eventually it was replced by the dreaded 'cod-liver oil capsule' which was drunk with your small bottle of milk .Something else I was never keen on .My dislike of milk stems for an unfortunate incident with a little girl in my class called Sylvia. She was new to our school and had never been given one of these capsules to swallow before ,she thought she had to bite it ,the resulting taste was awful, and when she was made to drink her milk down quickly to get rid of the taste unfortunatly the milk didn't stay down for long. She projectiled it across the class room in a spectacular style which put me off of milk for the rest of my long life:eek: Top class in our school(only had 4 in the whole school) had the big open boiler with a wire cage around it so in the winter it was great but in summer you just cooked. In 2002 I went to a reunion there and bumped into a lady who I didn't have a clue who it was and she said 'Hello Jackie you haven't changed a bit'!! Now I either looked like a pensioner at the age of 9 or I really had worn quite well:rotfl::rotfl:Back on subject though, the pure OJ from the clinic was delicious and yet my children didn't like it but my and OH used to swallow it down whan ever I got it .
P.S. My late OH had a penchant for Woodwards Gripe Water as well and would sneak a mouthful when ever he got the chance ;):D:D
