Done a quick check. My insurance is due In June. I've got 0 np claims. I've had 3 write offs in 5 years. 2 weren't my fault and 1 last year was. 3 points 3years ago in march.
So I bought a cheap car and have been putting £ away for insurance every month.
In June I'll have 1800 saved for insurance. My car is worth half that and needs upgrading. It's a mk4 golf
A quick insurance check shows 900 pound renewal. Better than expecting. Has come down from 1200.
The MK5 petrol 1.6fsi is 1450 renewal. A faster car (06 1.8 civic se) is 1750. I really want the faster car and have enough saved. I could get cheaper with telematic but don't want to. This was via gocompare which I always use (tried some individuals sites that aren't on the search engines but they're much more ) & I like paying insurance in full. My excess was 250 I think.
Question is are fsi engines fuel sensitive and rattly as I hear? And is the civic a better engineered car? I know the EX model has more toys than SE and wonder if that my affect renewal.

3 write-offs in 5 years and points  You really don't want a faster car.
Having said that I think the Civic would be the better all round car of the two.0 -
With 3 points (speeding or related to the write off?) and a write off that was your fault, with your desire to have a faster car but no telematic rather suggests you'd be wanting to drive in a manner that would result in a higher premium if tracked - perhaps better with a slower car until you calm down
Double check with the insurance / comparison site as to whether they want 3 years or 5 years for accidents and points too, even though officially points are lapsed after 3 years, don't want to get caught outSam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Most of my incident were over 3 years ago including 3 points (and speed awareness).
I've been driving this banger for 6 months and although fun, it's showing signs of problems so want out by summer.
Ok one write off was my fault. But I'd been going through personal problems at the time.
Been driving without issues since.
Gocompare ask for 5 years record. What about other sites? Because they ask for 5 years I assume not all insurers take the 5 years into account?
Yep I'm not doing telematic as I don't want to be spied on or penalised for doing 42mph in 40mph that's ridiculous. Go outside and see who doesn't go over 1-2mph over the limit.0 -

Back to my thread.
Ye I'm considering the civic. I feel I will get something reliable
Used to have the previous shape - great little hatch. The vtec is a sweet little engine. Really peppy.0 -

I would go for a Civic.
Though as others have mentioned you probably don't need the extra performance of the 1.8.0 -

So in less than 5 years you've accumulated 3 write offs and 2 speeding offences, and none of those are your fault for any reason aside from personal problems?
The only personal problem I can see that would result in that history is that your standard of driving needs some improvement.0
