Want to switch to Halifax, and tried using the switch form, but they ask for sort code and account no. of Halifax account I'm switching to, but I don't have one, do they not give you account when you switch or do I need to apply for account then enter details to switch to.

You need to open the account first and then switch, maybe at a later date.
Alternatively, you can complete the switch form at the end of the online application form to start the switch immediately.
If you're switching your 'main' account I'd suggest the first method is the best, since you don't want the switch taking place until you've got the debit card and access to online/telephone banking sorted out.0 -
Apply for the new account online, if your successful at the end of the process they'll ask if you want to switch, click yes and then they'll ask you for your old account details, wait 7 days and hey presto, account switches over and your Halifax account gets £1000
