Gym membership

I've been paying for a gym membership for 5-6 years now but used it, dont ask why :o

Can I cancel my direct debit without notifying them, since it was an initial contract of 12 months.

Also is there any chance of getting that money back, for the time beyond the contract at least?

Comments

  • 1 Check your terms and conditions. Most will ask for a notice period -one month is the commonest.
2 If you cancel the direct debit without notice you do not cancel the gym contract - so they will want paying and will bring in debt collectors to pay.
3 This gave me a laugh today - thank you for that - you have no chance whatsoever of getting any money back even though you did not use the facilties. For all you know they were keeping the place open, heated and staffed just in case you chose to turn up.

companies know as soon as you've cancelled a D/D and will pause your services immediately.

    just ask virgin mobile.

however, no you can't get the money back. you paid for the service, you just didn't bother to use it or cancel in time for the contract renewal.

Also is there any chance of getting that money back, for the time beyond the contract at least? Absolutely none, you have paid for membership - not use. You subscription paid for the facilities to be available to you. It is up to you to be pro-active in cancelling if you are not going to use the gym.

Write them an extremely polite and courteous email/letter - it'll probably be to the council if it's a public gym (like mine was), and tell them how much you'd love to come and use the facilities etc, that you enjoy it when you do go along etc, but are moving away from the area/taking a job that means you won't be around for the next 6 months.

Tell them you've "ummed" and "ahhed" about writing the email, that you don't mean to "be a pain", "would love to stay signed up" etc but can't make the commitment work.

I did, and they ripped up the contract without any fuss. :)
