Horrible rendering - what should we do?

We recently bought a small mid-terraced house. Unfortunately, it has a horrible, lumpy render, painted in an even more horrible salmony colour. The paint is also cracking in lots of places.
We obviously want to do something about it, but are limited budget-wise. We have had some quotes for just repainting that come to about £800-£900 (inc materials), but I'm wondering if it would be better to do something about the ugly render, at least at the front.
The neighbours have the front of their house peddle dashed and actually it doesn't look too bad. But I've read mixed things about it.
Does anyone have any recommendations about what we should do, ie just get it painted again, or change the render in some way (without a huge cost)?

If you are going to go the the effort of getting it pebbledashed, you may as well get it rendered as the costs will be similar. Pebbledash also hides a multitude of sins, cracks and damp wont show up until you have other problems and thus could prove more costly to repair.
Is that quote for painting including scaffolding? It could work out significantly cheaper if you are able to use tower scaffolding.
My preference would be to re-render properly, one side at a time if that is all you can afford but to get you by you could get all the cracks filled and get it painted...could you do this yourself?
If not then get a few more quotes from trusted tradesmen as depending on the size of the property and your location, that seems a little steep.
