Sainsbury Home Emergency Cover - does it cover leaking roof after storm damage?

Hi All,

Ive got home emergency cover through Sainsbury. Recently there have been severe storms in our area causing damage to many roofs. I now see that there has been some damage to slates on my roof causing water leaking through onto the ceiling below. I dont want to pay for the excess on my standard insurance policy. Would this be covered under the home emergency cover policy which has no excess? There is no mention of this in the policy booklet? help please....

It's unlikely that your emergency cover will duplicate cover that is provided on the main policy.

What does the policy booklet say is covered?

Drainage, plumbing, electrics, security, pests? Any mention of roof repairs?

The policy may cover the short term emergency repairs if water is entering your property. This may just be a tarpaulin secured to the roof.

It will almost certainly not cover any long term repairs to the storm damaged roof and these would need to be claimed on the buildings insurance.

The Sainsbury's wording I'm looking at (although there are a few versions) says it covers home emergencies as a result of...
Sudden and unforeseen roofing problems such as leaks
or tiles blown off during a storm or bad weather; or

Exactly as above - no mention of roof issues

Sounds like a buildings claim then.

In your OP you say the excess is putting you off making a claim.

A claim will cost more than your excess with premium increases.

Get a local roofer to quote and confirm the storm was to blame before contacting your insurer. Once you do the loss will be on your record and have to be disclosed to insurers you go to for quotes over up to 5 years
