Car insurance, moving house

Hello,

My car insurance expires 12/02/16. I'm currently on maternity leave and use the car maybe once every 2 weeks.
I'm moving house on 27/02/16. I know that I will have to pay an admin fee for change of address, is there any way I can avoid this? Is it illegal for me to put my new address down when I get my car insurance on the 12th? I had considered just not driving between 12th- 27th so I can get away with not insuring my cat until the day I move, but I've read up on it and seen that I need to let the DVLA know first. What do you suggest I do? It seems really unfair for me to be charged £75+ for change of address 2 weeks after taking out car insurance. I'm struggling on maternity pay as it is.

Thanks for any help in advance.

If you dont insure it you need to SORN it and the tax gets cancelled and refunded if any.
When you take out insurance you will need to retax it.
The car will need to be parked off the public road on private land.

If you insure it as the new address will you be telling them its kept at the new address and will it?

Find an insurer that wont charge £75 admin fee, Mine only charges £15.

Dont forget the admin fee isnt all you need to pay, the new address maybe rated higher even if you think its a better area.

£75+ is a lot for an admin fee.

You will easily find insurers who charge a lot less.

(Your change of address can affect your premium - up or down - as well as trigger an admin fee)

But when you complete your application you do agree you are telling the truth, so it's your call whether or not you lie.

You can leave your car uninsured if you leave it off the road. It's unlikely you will get any reminder over this under the continuous insurance rules if you insure it within 15 days. Are you happy it won't get stolen etc whilst uninsured?
  • Are you woth a broker or an insurer? Either way £75 for admin is extortionate. Are you sure that isn't yor cancellation charge? It's worth ringing and asking. Explain that after your renewal your moving house, and can they waiver the admin charge. Most will. It might be that your new address rates higher, so you may still have to pay, but at least it's minus the admin fee.

You can always go elsewhere, buy over the phone at your current address and ask them if they'll waiver their charge too.

    Here's a wheeze.

Get a new policy with a company with a low cancellation fee. Then cancel within the 14 days "cooling off".

Then take out a new policy for your new address, no admin charge to pay and no possibility of being overcharged for your change of address.

(Catch would be if you claimed during the 14 days, meaning you would have to keep the policy - or pay the full 12 months if you cancel)

I am exactly in the same boat...Renewing insurance on 21 February and moving house a week later (I already posted about this few days ago). The best option is the above advice...to buy a policy to get you through the move then cancel within 14 days. I am shopping around for a policy and the rates have gone massively up this year..and that is without the admin charge !!
