PIP managing toilet needs

I put that I can but my husband has just pointed out that I sometimes use pads when I have a flare up(coughing fits) because I get a bit of leakage .:o I'm so embarrassed bringing this up. Would it be worth mentioning in my mandatory reconsideration as I didn't put it on the original form and it isn't all the time.

    Difficult one :)

The use of incontinence pads can be considered an aid in this descriptor (managing toilet needs) and would get you 2 points if you met the criteria.

My understanding is that it would depend on the frequency of the occurrence, the amount (SORRY!) and whether it arises directly from your condition.

When in doubt it is probably best to mention it but whether you are awarded the extra points would likely be dependent on the severity of the problem and what causes it.

    Not much help, sorry :)

By all means mention it, but I doubt it will score you any points. Many women have stress incontinence, it would need to be severe to entitle you to PIP.

If you do need some assistance speak to your GP, they can give advice or if required refer you to the incontinence service/ nurse. Nothing at all to be embarrassed about, it's very common ;)
  • The test is all about what you're like most of the time. If you need the pads 4 days out of 7 then mention it. It gets you 2 points. If not , then "sometimes" doesn't count. You get 0 points. Look up the PIP descriptors before you write your mandatory reconsideration letter as this may help you in formulating your answers more precisely.

The points in this area are odd, my wife needs someone to get her on and off the toilet as we don't have a hoist, however as she needs someone to get her on and on the sofa, this isn't actually classed as needing assistance to use the toilet, so it only goes in one box.

This is just something many women suffer from as they get older. Just part of life.
  • re "my wife needs someone to get her on and off the toilet "Descriptor 5d is probably relevant. "Needs assistance to be able to manage toilet needs"= 4 points. https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/449043/pip-assessment-guide.pdf
is the Guide. See page 78:
"Assistance is support that requires the presence and physical intervention of another person to help the claimant complete the activity, including doing some, but not all of the activity in question. To apply, this only needs to be required for part of the activity."

Is a catheter considered an aid? I struggled a bit with the descriptors on this so just gave up looking.

I've had my bladder removed, a new one reconstructed from bowel, and a procedure where a channel is built through the belly button. I now empty my bladder by inserting a catheter through my belly button.

Am having problems with leakage via the belly button which obviously isn't pleasant. Anyone hazard a guess at where this might fit on the descriptors?
  • A catheter certainly is an aid.
