Edinburgh in a day for a 4 year old boy

Hi.

I'm about to take my son who is 4, on his first flight, heading to Edinburgh in mud February. We are staying over night and have the afternoon of one day and a few hours in the morning of the next day. Looking for suggestions to make this a special trip - any ideas?

National Museum of Scotland has plenty to offer for children and its free. My slightly older daughter enjoyed the Museum of Childhood, also free!

Camera Obscura, on the way up to the castle.

National Museum if it rains. Camera Obscura if it's a bright day.
The Zoo is pretty good but that can easily be a full day to get round so perhaps best to leave that for another visit. Gorgie City Farm was great when I was his age and an easy bus ride from the city centre (ok walk too but probably a bit far for a 4 year old).

If you have just got the day you don't want to be spending a lot of time travelling from one thing to another. So .... Definitely the Camera Obscura (great if it is wet). It is next to the Castle so you can walk right up to that without actually paying the entrance fee. There is good stuff for children at the Museum in Chambers Street which is also nearby. Then down the Royal Mile to the Museum of Childhood.

Tram in from the airport will probably be his highlight of the day.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
