closed old student account

Options
Hi
Don't know if I'm posting in the right place sorry :(
This is in regard to a closed bank account, I started Uni in 2008 and opened a student bank account, I had an overdraft of I think £1000 and a credit card with £500 limit, I ended up leaving Uni in 2010 due to ill health (I had anxiety and depression, not an excuse just the facts) and stupidly never informed the bank of this because I’d gone well into my overdraft and credit card amounts and I was young, stupid and naïve and dug myself a hole, I paid off the whole debt in 2013 and closed the bank account, but I now realise I should have been paying fees and interest during those 3 years of paying the debt off as I wasn't a student (again I was naïve and stupid), I now know this was fraudulent and I’d be happy to pay anything off that I should have done now if required (so it isn't hanging over my head) but don’t know who to contact about this or what to do.
I know this is from years ago but I have been going through all my old paperwork and I noticed this, I still suffer from severe anxiety and this is bothering me so much.
Thanks

  • If you were a student, I believe you can keep your student bank account for up to 2 (potentially 3) years after you finish/leave study, so you should be okay.

If you really want to find out, call the bank and explain the situation, but they'll probably say oh you owe it to us, even if you don't.

If the account was closed properly, stop worrying and forget about it.

IMO It wasn't fraud as you were a student when you opened it and repaid all the money you borrowed. As the the account is closed with a zero balance, they won't have the facility to reopen it anyway.

Don't worry, if you had owed them anything extra, they'd have asked you for it before they'd have let you close the account.

Double-check that your credit history shows the account as closed, or not at all - you can do that for free on noddle.co.uk.
