you are confusing the list price with the actual cost to the manufacturer which will be very little over standard.

Some people seem to think they should be related...

Back in the day, there did used to be a reason for certain paints to be extra-cost, because your normal colours were just colour-coat, while black and metallics were clear-coated.

Now, though? No. Everything's clear-coated, and the "free" colours change regularly according to what's unfashionable.

Having read up on the legal concept of "loss of bargain", it does indeed seem that because we entered into a contract (by verbal agreement and them taking the deposit), that the proper remedy for their breach of contract would be for the dealer to put me in the position I would be in had the contract been fulfilled.

I think this means they would either have to supply the car I bought at the agreed price, or I can buy the same thing elsewhere and reclaim the difference from them if it ends up costing more.

    I'll see how it goes!

So they refunded my deposit today. They said that if they decide they don't want to sell a car to me, then they're perfectly entitled to refund me. They didn't seem to care at all about the breach of contract (or understand what it meant).

I'm not particularly impressed with them.

So I made my complaint and it looks like it was worthwhile.

Not only am I now buying the car at the previously agreed price, but the manufacturer has also given me an additional £500 in vouchers towards the total cost.

Maybe if you asked your pension provider how much is invested in the finance arm of major motor manufacturers you'd get a surprise! ;)
