And yet that means you arent getting their best offer.

Sometimes the nonsense is the only way to get a proper decent deal.

I've been doing it for years with various companies including virgin, using varying "techniques" and am happy enough im getting the best deal they will offer.

Its all a game, like the OP they know rightly im not going anywhere
  • Hi there, Ive had this exact same thing happen this morning. Rung them up as my bill has gone up. And told them that I cant afford to pay what its gone upto. To be told sorry I cant help. I then said well I will cancel my dd too you and he told me I'm in an 18 month contract so will still need to pay. Anyway was put through to retentions and they also said they couldn't help but as its only a 12 month contract I can be disconnected in a month. So now I'm being disconnected next month. I've been with them for 9 yrs and its gone from £20 and month to over £50 a month and I've never up graded my channels or anything. Its what they have done.
Did they say about sending the box out to get it all sent back?

OP, your problem was that you don't appear to have actually spoken to retentions. They're the only ones with the goodies: the first tier drones simply don't have the authority to discount very much.
Saying you are thinking of leaving is not enough, better to say you are leaving. If they fail to offer the deal you want then you can simply 'uncancel' during your notice period. But remember that all retentions do is..retain your business...that's the sole job function, unlike customer services.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Macman - When I called the first time I said I would think about the offer I was given. When I called back later that day I said to cancel my services as I wasn´t happy with the offer given. The agent more or less said sorry that i felt that way and if I change my mind I can always come back and then went ahead and gave me a cancellation date. Shortly after I received an email from them detailing the cancellation process and instructions on how to send equipment back to them. Do you not automatically get put through to retentions to cancel?

I still haven´t heard anything from them besides the email.

No you have to wait to be called back.

They are busy as the 30th was the final day for some to enact the cancellation based on February price rise.

    Be patient, they should call.

To get to Retentions, dial Customer Service 150, select options you are moving/leaving, then specific option "thinking of leaving for any other reason".
  • Peter999 - Those were the options I selected.

However, I finally received a call from VM today. I was offered, and accepted, to keep my services as they are (M+ TV, 100mb BB and free evening/weekend calls), an upgrade to the super hub 2 and a month free for 36.99. In hindsight perhaps I could have held off and got a better deal but I´m happy with what I got. Its a saving of 230 pounds a year. The big savings seem to be if you have one of the bigger packages, which I have no need for as I don´t watch much TV. I also have very good deals on my mobile phone contracts with Virgin which I think I would lose if I left and went with a different provider as the deals are for VM customers only.

Thanks for all the advice you all gave me.
