About eBay and paying

If anyone can confirm I'll appreciate it. I hope this is the right forum to ask. I made a 'best offer' bid on ebay and it was not accepted. The seller contacted me when the item ended unsold and said I could have it at my 'best offer' price.

I was asked to contact a mobile number provided to make arrangements. I'm sure somewhere on eBay or PayPal it says not to do this. I feel a bit wary and replied saying I would prefer to pay through eBay and PayPal. The problem is the listed item date has expired and the item is not listed any more. I'm really looking for reassurance that I've done the right thing, please.

Thank you

Best to do this if cash on collection (following inspection) only. There is no protection using Paypal outside of ebay.
Please do not quote spam as this enables it to 'live on' once the spam post is removed. ;)

Thanks Money maker. I was to contact the mobile number to pay and to arrange delivery and this is what I was wary of doing. I could not find a link on eBay to find an answer from them. Thank you for replying.

The seller is trying to avoid paying fees. Ask him to put it back on ebay at the price you originally offered.

Thanks LadyDee. After I posted here, before I read replies, I found the link on eBay for advice. In support of exactly what you say this is the reply:

'Your offer died when the listing ended.
The seller is attempting to arrange an off eBay deal with you and both of you could lose your accounts if this is carried through.

Tell them to relist at the agreed price.'

Thank you again, Lady Dee and Money maker. I didn't want to offend the seller but I feel reassured now that it was the right thing to do.

    This is not quite correct.

Just wanted to add that there is full paypal protection for purchases that are not bought through ebay.
Obviously if its a face to face transaction then cash is always better.

But anything bought online and paid as payment as goods via paypal still offers a high level of protection.

Although this might have been better posted in the ebay section.

Thanks Alykatz. Please see post 5 - I don't want to compromise my eBay account or the seller's eBay account. Thanks for taking time to reply and for mentioning the eBay section - I'll look for it.

Yes i fully understand you dont want to compromise your account, Lady Dee and others had covered that point already. Which is why i didnt comment on it.

I just didnt want anyone to get the impression that using paypal in general outside of ebay was not safe.

I'm guessing that this wasn't an official "Second Chance Offer" then?

That's right Mr_Singleton - it wasn't an offician 'Second Chance Offer' - The listing had ended unsold.

    Thanks.

Ask him to send you a Paypal invoice, or offer cash on collection (if feasible).

As long as the Paypal invoice isn't for a gift purchase (ie it's an invoice for goods) you will have protection. In fact for Money Maker's benefit, Paypal give MORE protection than Ebay. 180 days in fact.
