motherboard changed-but still problem remains.

Hello folks,

We have a computer for our son, got through the family fund, its a small form case, flat like an x box, we put monitor on top of it.

Its got this really irritating intermittent problem when sometimes it totally refuses to power up, press switch on front, usually blue light comes on around switch, but sometimes it doesn't and computer refuses to power up. Change the three point cable with monitor, still no good, do the usual troubleshooting things like not using the surge protector still no good. Pull power lead out at back and hold switch for 20 secs as was instructed to clear any power in motherboard, still no good.

Then leave it for a few hours and hey presto we have life again, really irritating.

We sent it back to the company who do the computers for the family fund, they say that they have changed the motherboard, but still same problem.

What components remaining could stop computer powering up at times, power supply, memory, power switch at front?

Or could it be something to do with our Electric supply, which powers everything else fine in house?

Just refused to power up again today, left it for a few hours and now it powers up fine, switched off and powered on again no problem.

Any advice as to what may be causing this gratefully appreciated.

Thanks a lot

  • +1 for PSU. The PSU receives an "ON" command from the front panel switch,so it MIGHT be the switch, but I've never come across a duff switch.
  • Thanks for replies. We did do upgrade from windows 8.1 to windows 10 but don't think the power options in windows 10 should have anything to do with it.

Will give it one more chance and if it does same again will be on phone to the company. Rather strange that it will power on a lot of the time, but then all of a sudden it refuses to power up.

Just as a matter of interest is it quite difficult for company to diagnose the problem since its not all there all the time, and is it just a matter of replacing all the parts until problem is solved?

Thanks again for all the helpful advice.

How old is the machine ??

Basics of repair are that you swap out known good components to test .
In this case it would be PSU then RAM then Video Card Motherboard .

Got computer two weeks ago last Thursday, problems started the following Tuesday, returned to company and came back again on Thursday just gone.

Problem is, if when it goes back to them, and it seems to work fine with their tests, and problem powering up doesn't happen, can they just return it to us, and say we can't find any faults?

If it was a ram problem, wouldn't we at least see that light on switch at front of computer, that at least it will power up?

As I say it 's very much an intermittent problem.

    Thanks once again.

I would say its a faulty PSU , suggest they swop it for another one under warranty , PS: have a camera handy to show it not firing up

I wonder if putting the monitor on the case is perhaps bowing the case slightly so the switch isn't making proper contact. Just a thought
