USA travel

Hi
I'm traveling to Florida in October . My travel company state I need 6 months left in my passport which I've read isn't true for visits to the us. There will be 5 months remaining when we travel will I have any trouble at the airport getting on the plane? We have all had our vwp done and authorized .
I have no problems with the renewal of the passport before we go just that we have already done and paid for the esta forms with the passport I have . If I did another would this flag up?

  • I just asked this question in the ESTA thread, top of the page threads. The answer I received was "No, you don't need it if the passport runs until after you return to the UK". Certainly the UK gov site says that as well, it appears some countries do need the passport to have six months but I guess, if like us you have a full British Citizen passport and have not been to certain countries, then you and I should be okay. Must admit when we received the ESTA approval I just thought that if the passport was no good they would not have granted the ESTA but in other places it does say even with approval for ESTA you could be turned away but I don't think it would be because of the lack of six months. The US gov site has a broken thread that should have taken us to the countries not covered by the six month rule. Going to an Asian country and certain European ones do need six months, that is on the UK gov site.

There is a fair amount of conflicting information on this (I've even seen different information in the past on the US embassy site compared to the US State Dept site...), so I'm not certain which is correct.

What is definitely correct is that if you do renew your passport, you will have to apply (and pay) for a new ESTA. They cannot currently be transferred between passports, regardless of the time remaining on them.
  • When entering the US on a UK passport under the VWP, the only time the passport expiry date is a concern is if you wanted to stay for the full 90 days normally granted.
If your passport expires more than 90 days after your arrival you will be given a 90 day entry stamp but if the expiry date is less than 90 days, you will only be allowed to stay up until the date of expiry.
  • Agree about the conflicting information. My friend, who has the passport, is still very worried, not helped by the girl in the travel agent who said she did need six months, I then pointed the girl to the UK government site and she just said "well we don't get training on such things". Does anyone know if there is a number either at the US embassy or a UK government office that can be called to find out the correct answer?
