Electrician, move lights from wall to ceiling

Options
Hi all,

Just wondering what an average of reasonable cost would be to remove 4 light fixtures from the wall and install the fixtures / wiring for two lights in the ceiling.

(assume floorboards come up on the upstairs floors to do this)

Would not need the walls to be made good as I have a decorator coming)

As part of this job would also want an electrical socket moved 100cm to the right.

I've got someone coming today to quote but any guidance from your experienced selves here always appreciated.

A.

  • Hiya,

I've subcontracted a similar job to one of my electricians (6x wall fixtures to 1 ceiling rose) in London for £140 plus vat all in. The price might be a bit distorted as I sublet all of my electrics and use various electricians quite frequently, but I wouldn't pay more than £20 per electric point as there's plenty of quality electricians that charge similar rates. Hope this helps.

    Thanks really useful.

The two quotes I had was £350.

This is install two additional sockets,
    Remove 4 wall lights
    Install 2 ceiling lights
Install trunking into the plaster wall to hide the cables from a wall mounted tv.

What exactly are you suggesting is included, and likewise what is excluded in this price?

Indeed - that is why I tried to extrapolate more information as to what he was suggesting was or was not included in this £20 per point. Alas, it was to no avail as he decided not to answer me!

I didn't suggest anything, just sharing what I've paid for a similar job. All materials were included (apart from the light fixture) and both the walls & ceiling had to be made good by someone else.

I didn't know there was a time limit that I had to respond to you within, but I hope my previous answer clears up a few things for you. Obviously I meant 20 quid per minor electric jobs such as light fixtures or switches and I don't believe in paying £20 for a cooker installation etc.

Thanks for your contribution to this post, it kinda sums up your post count.

    Best,

Electricians in London in this case VAT registered ( apart from most one man bands tend avoid going VAT registered it means working harder to earn the same amount?and client base tends not to be able to claim VAT thus making there work more expensive to there core clients? ) Prices you quote how they'd ever make enough to become VAT registered is beyond me ? VAT brings in lots of extra expenses and little benefits to these type of firms ?.

Or a company employing others at that rate they’d be bust in weeks? Even traveling one street can take 30 minutes + (even without traffic you have to find somewhere to park and most of London’s a nightmare ) Either they go out twice first to price, second time to do the works? Or except your price of £20 works unseen? Your also including materials ( excluding fittings )??
“SUBLET” works :rotfl:Or is it t you call they come out straight away ?, do works, invoice you the £20 ...? Utter rubbish sums up your posts .....

Be aware that you can't just join the cables in the walls and chase up to the ceiling as then, with the lights removed, the cables are no longer run the the safe zones. This might be why you've been quoted what appears to be a higher than expected price
