Build out the wall with cement backerboard and then tile. Anything else is likely to fail in time.

That's exactly what I'd do. Everything else is either ugly or a bit of a bodge.

The most obvious move is to split the difference, fill both gaps with silicone ,run it up the wall slightly to prevent any water ingress, then tile as usual.

You should be using mastic below the bottom course of tiles, rather than grout, so the worse case scenario should be a 2mm convex bead of silicone at either end ;)

Mapei do a reasonable range of coloured silicones if you'd like something that matches your grout colour.

Knauf or Gyproc water resistant plasterboard on the wall, full height or, better, Hardiebacker cement board, fitted to wall. A 20mm gap will be pretty much perfectly filled, board is 12mm, tiles on top...

A small ledge won't look good in the long run, it will surely fail in the long run, and will be ruddy difficult (for your wife...) to keep clean.

{... runs from the wrath of Doozergirl...}:D

After one house move, it took my wife 18 months to ask where the vacuum cleaner was kept, and then she had to ask how to change the bag...

She does have many other virtues.... Many.

Thanks for all the further replies. I can see that a bit of backer board could be of real benefit here.

Anyway, I've decided to buy some tile cutting gear and have a go myself, rather than pay someone to do this job, as I've been quoted £66/m2.

Seems high to me, but there's also the added benefit of learning, because I still have another bathroom to do.
  • Something like this bedded under the last row of tiles.

The different expansion of steel bath, wood and tile would mean small pieces of tile laid flat wouldn't stay in place IMHO.

If the wall hasn't already been tiled, I'd build it out with 12mm thick cement backerboard then tile over.

Hi. What is the name of what you've suggested putting under the tiles and where can you buy it?

    Thanks.

Bath seal strip, bath seal trim. Try Amazon, but Homebase, B&Q & Wickes, as well as any bathroom type shop will haev it. Prices vary enormously, and not necessarily in proportion to quality!
