travel Insurance on packaged account

I had a RBS Royalties Gold account for over 10 years, paying £12 + per month. The benefits included travel insurance which I did use whenever I travelled; I even had to claim on it once and had no trouble with it. My issue is that when I went to Australia for a trip that was over 30 days I was not able to use this insurance (just as well I checked in advance). It appears that the insurance only covers trips of less than one month, however I was unaware of this. Do i have a right to claim the fees back for mis-selling. There was never any discussion with bank staff about conditions when the bank account was sold to me. I also had trouble trying to buy something through their discounting system only to be told I had to use a specific bank card (credit card) to get the discount!

  • It doesn't sound like the plan was unsuitable, given that you successfully claimed on it - even if it did not cover other situations.

If you were to successfully complain it is likely that the cost of the insurance payout could be deducted from any redress.

The packaged account paperwork would have made it clear both in the summary and details Ts & Cs that this was a maximum of 30 days - you not reading them is not a miss-sale. If the bank has records proving they sent you this information you will lose on that point as not reading doesn't mean you weren't informed.

As above any refund of packaged fees will have the value of your claim removed from it (even if you claimed more than you paid - you are fortunate that they won't come after you for the excess in that situation)

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

  • Claim anyway saying you were mi sold a packaged bank account. I have just had a claim paid out by RBS for Royalties gold despite the fact I used the benefits (e.g. free airport lounge, cheap airport parking, discounted holidays) several times. I told them that when I opened the account with the bank I wasn't given the option of a "free" account which I would have taken.
