How to fix plasterboard hole

Hello,

We had to cut a 3x3'' (7x7cm) hole to a plasterboard to check something behind it.
I've saved the plasterboard piece we cut out.

What's the best way to fix it back in? There is nothing behind it to hold the loose pieces - could I stick it with silicone all around and then a filler that I sand and paint over? Would this hold it?

It's very high up, and not likely to be bumped/pushed etc.

Thoughts, ideas?

Many thanks in advance!

I was involved some years ago in some house wiring. We had to cut holes in the ceilings to run wires. We just stuck the circles of plaster board back into the holes with Polyfiila or something similar. No problem at all.
Although actually there is a video on YouTube that shows just how to do it. Though personally I thought that they went a bit over the top.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

Use some gripfill / sticks like !!!! to glue some lolly sticks across the inside of the hole. Use same to stick plasterboard onto lolly sticks. Fill joints to make good.

Another vote for lolly sticks. You may need to insert a screw into the centre of the plasterboard to pull it flush, this can be filled.

where do you get the lolly sticks from? I have exactly the same issue and was about to post a picture but the op has described it perfectly.

Worried Jim - try amazon, they are under £2, delivered. Just make sure the length works for you

    Lolly Sticks ?

Get a couple of pieces of batten about three and a half foot long and hold that in the hole behind the existing plasterboard and screw a screw through at each end to hold the battens in place then replace the cut out piece and screw this to the battens, plaster over

Get some 1x2. Cut 1 or 2 lengths (one should be fine for that size hole) 2 or 3 inches longer than the hole. Use plasterboard screws to screw this batten to the existing plasterboard, then screw the bit you cut out to the batten in the hole. Use some easy sand filler in the screw heads and around the cut out. Sand it down level and paint it to match the existing colour.

    Easy.

sorry read the OPs post as 3 foot. Scale down accordingly and yes one batten would be fine.
