Cavalier King Charles Spaniels in crisis!

Options
Cavaliers need your help, they suffer from two big major health issues. Studies have shown that both Syringomyelia ( SM ) and Mitral Valve Disease ( MVD ) are less likely to occur if cavaliers are health screened before breeding. We are asking for the Kennel Club to make health testing mandatory for this breed. Please sign the Cavalier petition that is already reached 22,805 signatures?

I'm not allowed to put a link on, but if you type in Cavaliers Are Special it will lead you to the page to sign the petition. Thank you! xx

It took long enough for the KC to admit that it is not possible to have all four colours from Blenheim parents.

Probably more effective would be passing the word to fture owners that they should only buy from breeders who do test and have a good breed history.

I'm lucky that my nearly 13-year-old only has a grade 3 murmur, which doesn't bother him and my 12 year-old is both SM and MVD clear.

Teddy,my younger dog, is the spitting image of Humphrey on that webpage.
  • The group is already raising awareness as well as the petition. Sadly not everyone knows about the health issues that cavaliers can inherit. There is still many cavalier owners haven't heard of CM/SM or the symptoms it causes!

Glad your two are doing well, always nice to hear about long living cavaliers. Especially as so many are losing their lives far too early. Me and my family lost a little ruby boy in May from CM/SM and seizures. He didn't reach his third birthday and came from a KC show breeder!

I knew someone who exposed a cruel breeder, rescued one dog from her and got the authorities interested, but we lost touch so I don't know the outcome.

The breeder was featured in a tv competition and was KC accredited, but as the friend discovered, accreditation was given based on a breeder's word (eg that tests were carried out), with no proof required.

Cavaliers were doomed when Alansmere Aquarius won Crufts BiS and all the backyarders jumped on the popularity bandwagon. Before that it was common for them to live into their late teens.
