Is This Laptop Any Good?

Options
hi,

i saw this Hp laptop (HP PAVILION DV9574) that i like for £999.99
  • 2 GHz Processor speed
  • Windows Vista Home Premium
  • Nvidia GF 8600M 256 MB (Graphics)
  • Intel Core 2 Duo
  • 17" Screen
  • 400 GB Storage (hard drive)
  • 2048 MB Memory (RAM)
  • Processor cache 4 MB
  • Weights 3.55 kg
link to all specs: http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/p...ification#spec

i read up on the specs and all i know is that if your laptop is gonna have windows vista it should have at least 2gb RAM, which the above laptop has.

im planning on using the laptop for everything - homework, surfing the net, downloading music, video etc, photoshop, playing games, watching movies, editing videos...

is that laptop good for the price?...could i get better for cheaper?

im hoping to buy the laptop in septmember so any help is appricated.

I think that's a very good spec for the price - you can get it for just under £940 delivered at Dabs. Complete specs at HP.

Does it have to be a laptop? Because you can get more for your money on a desktop, or save considerably on an equivalent spec. G
  • desktop's take up too much space and it would be easier for me to carry the laptop around anyway.

How big an issue is the space/mobility? Dell can do you a similar specced PC for £600, then you would have £400 left for a laptop. You could get a decent laptop for surfing/homework/music for £300, and spend that extra £100 to beef up the PC a bit.

Unfortunately, laptops have never been a good gaming platform. Never have, never will. If you want to game, you're going to need to be near to a power supply if you want more than an hour out of it. And they get hot, very hot. So, unless you have your heart set on gaming on the go, I'd advise a separate PC for gaming, and a cheap laptop for everything else.

I currently use a HP Compaq nc6400 laptop for home and general work use and I can't fault it

However, I have just had to buy a second laptop purely for work purposes
(Long story, but it's for contractual reasons)

So I've bought a second HP from Misco.co.uk
This new one's a HP6715s and I've bought it for £410 Including VAT
(Lower spec than my existing one, but it will do what I need it to)

I could have got away with buying a really cheap one from say, Tesco, but I needed one that was a bit more "rugged"

In my opinion (and bearing in minde that I'm no IT expert) the cheaper ones are fine for using around the house and occasionally taking outside, but when your livelihood relies on the thing working reliably after being carried around from office to car boot to office on a daily basis, I felt it worth paying a little more (but not too much more ;) ) for a "Business specification" laptop - HPs certainly feel "solid"
