We have a pre-pay meter...Last week through the cold spell I had to put £100 worth of gas on due to increased heating useage....the heating was on for no more than 6 hours a day for 7 days... Shower used twice daily.
Usually I put £20 every 6 days for 2 hours daily and 2 showers....could someone please point me in the right direction to check this out because I'm starting to think I'm being ripped off.... I called BG they said it's correct.

  • BG on prepayment meter for gas is about the most expensive set up (they're actually fairly reasonable for electricity)

Can you not switch to a cheaper supplier?

If those figures are to be trusted, £100 or 42 hours of heating is about £2.50/hour.

You could run a LOT of electric heaters for that! They'd cost 1/10th of that.

Lol I know.... We use a electric fire in the living room, bathroom and conservatory... I think I will look at buying some oil filled heaters for the colder days because if we had a month of very cold weather it will cost me approx £400 pound....

Agreed, check the debt screen( 26 ) for debt and even the first credit screen can show a debt with standing charges which may build up at £1.80 a week if you don t top up often.
OP, you are probably paying at least 25% more for your gas on BGs expensive standard/variable tariff with your prepayment meter at over 4p/kwhr when I m with BG on 3p/kwhr. You can even find a supplier who offers as low as 10p a day (70p a week ) standing charge and only 2.6 p/kwhr (Zog energy )so a credit meter may be something to aim for if you want these big gas bills kept down

But a kWh of gas will cost you about a third of the cost of a Kwh of electricity. Even if as above you are paying 25% more than the going rate for gas, it is still vastly cheaper.
No on heats with electricity if they have mains gas.

Excuse my stupidity..... So basically it's still cheaper using the gas than electric heaters?...
I can't access the meter myself and my daughter's won't have a clue, will have to check kWh when husband gets back next week.

    IMHO, it isn't a simple yes/no.

Firstly, an electric heater delivers just about 100% of a kWhr as heat - just where you want it - not so with a gas boiler, Secondly, gas usually does mean central heating - heating far more of the house than the typical electric heater(s) situation.

Probably more yes than no - but .... :)
