Right, it's getting near to that time of year again where I send off all my payslips etc to the wonderful people at hmrc and they tell me they charged me top much tax and give me back some money...in theory.
I've had a bit of a read and it looks as though based on my employment, I should be able to claim back a fixed amount for tools. Has anyone done this?
I'm paid salary so can I just send details of employment to climb it back or is there a pile of forms to put me off doing it? Also do they need receipts as it's a fixed amount?
I think I might be able to claim a mileage too as on the occasion I can claim mileage from work, they pay 25p where as the hrmc website says 45p.
Does anyone have any experience with this?

As it says, if you want to claim the actual amount spent you need receipts. If the flat rate you don't.

Rates are 45p for first 10,000 miles and 25p thereafter. That's for using your own vehicle.

It depends how much you are looking to claim back. If less than. £2,500 you complete a P87. It fairly straightforward, I done a dummy run for someone earlier in the month and took me about 10minutes.0 -

If I travel to the same place of work but am still paid mileage at 25p per mile (but am under 10000 per year) can I claim back on the remainder still?
Should I be taxed on expenses for subsistence and professional fees that I claim back from work? (through PAYE)
Can I back date claims like I can for if I've had a tax code changed or otherwise been charged wrongly?0 -

You will need to explain a bit more about what travel & subsistence you are talking about. Where are you traveling from/to?
You can't claim business mileage for travelling from home to work.
Whether you had a wrong tax code at some point doesn't necessarily mean you've paid the wrong tax. It depends on the figures.0 -
If your employer is paying you a mileage allowance, they should be giving you a form at the end of the tax year that lists the sums paid, the total mileage and the "profit element". In my case the profit element is negative reflecting the difference between the actual mileage rate paid and the 45p allowance. I enter that negative sum as the expense on my tax form and include a note to that effect. This reduces my total tax due and normally results in a rebate. I'm not sure if this is the correct procedure but it has never been questioned by HMRC.0

There is no obligation for your employer to provide you with any document at the end of the year of non-taxable expenses.0 -
By travel and subsistence I mean if I'm working on a site and not at the office and I climb back the cost of meals and fuel for a hire car, should I be taxed on that when I'm paid it back?0

Ok, I thought the P11D was compulsory for travel expenses.0 -
