Just a question to those who feeds their dog on a raw diet, does it work out cheaper than dried food?0

Hi, i was talking to John Burns at crufts this year ( Burns Pet Food) about dog food, it really opened my eyes on what goes on, we were lucky that our dogs have always been on good quality food. There's an article on his site about BARF which he has his views on the diet.

Hmm I dont think John Burns is the best person to go to for advice. Its like asking Tesco if they think its a good idea to get all your food from a farmers market... you are going to get a biased answer!
At the moment I am giving raw chicken in a morning and dry food in the evening. It seems to be working ok. The dogs are enjoying it and i'm forever hearing people say their dogs have more energy so it has to be a good thing.
Price wise. Well I buy expensive food (£45 per 15kg) so yes I imagine it would be cheaper in my case. Especially once I start ordering bulk from landywoods. I've come to think of the dry food as a convenience food now... like us going out and getting a takeaway - its great, but you wouldnt want to live on it.0 -
hello-I give my four dogs a very varied diet consisting of wholemeal pasta/bread, with lightly cooked veg (microwaved carrots, cabbage etc) at each meal. With that they have either pet mince (from my local butcher-50p per llb)/tripe-27p per llb(lightly warmed throgh but not cooked). They also have raw bones each week and liver. They also have tinned pilchards, and our leftovers including a lot of pulse based curries-with no ill effects. They have no meaty leftovers as I do not eat it.They also have soya milk to drink.
I think the key to feeding dogs well and cheaply is to give them a very varied diet and not to be too bothered about what passes as "conventional" feeding. You hear lots of people say that you shouldnt give dogs this or that-mine have had allsorts although they are not keen on bananas. They are fit and healthy and love their food. They also do not have too much protein in their meals-its bulked out a lot with veg and carbs.
I think it cost me about £1.50 a day to feed all four, and they are quite big dogs.0 -
With regards to the growling, that's resource guarding and can get nasty. We've had to stop feeding my dog chicken as he snapped at me the other day. He has NEVER shown any other aggression. Google resource guarding and there's lots of info on how to deal with it.
Good luck!!!0 -
We feed our dog a BARF diet. We give her raw chicken wings and poultry necks along with a veg / meat mince that we purchase frozen. The range we use is Prize Choice from Anglian Meat Products as we have a local distributor who orders exactly what we want. The web address for Prize Choice is http://www.prizechoice.co.uk/
In addition she has bones from the butcher.
She's fit as a fiddle and we've never had any health problems. One of the main benefits we see with her diet is that her poos are small and firm (bit like cocktail sausages) and they don't smell which makes scooping on a walk more pleasurable for me!0 -
Thanks again all.
Well things seem to be going well. She's been on a full raw diet for a few days now. No bad signs, no change at all actually yet.
She hasnt growled again, but maybe now she sees the lovely chicken isnt a one off!
I'm still feeding my pup with dry food as im a bit scared to change his diet just yet... soon though I think.0
