Since having my gas meter changed, consumption seems to have increased by 50%

Are you assuming the new metric meter had a start reading of zero, or are you using the actual installation start reading in your calculations - there should be a card tied to the meter which has the installation reading for the new meter written on it by the installer - are you using this figure to work out your consumption?

It didn't start at zero, it started at 02111 and that is the figure I'm using as a start point.

  • For the figures dates and kwh figures you have posted above.

Are you sure you are using only confirmed/actual readings?

None of those meter readings are estimates are they?

Can you just type the dates and the actual meter readings.

I am sure you have calculated it correctly, but it always helps to double check.

Comparing my gas usage to yours for 2014/15, I used about 1.9 times your kWh.
If the same ratio is assumed against my usage for the period since you had the metric meter, it comes out at 2840kWh for your predicted usage. So it does appear that your recorded 4150kWh is 46% more than you would expect.
Maybe the old meter was recording a bit less than actual. I would assume reconditioned meters are calibrated in some way before they are sent out for installation, so while it's not impossible the new one could be faulty, I would think it more likely the old one was faulty (in your favour).
Difficult to test with any degree of accuracy though.

when they work out the bill , with metric meters they will multiply the units used by approx 11 to get the amount of kwhrs, then multiply that by the tariff, add 5% and standing charges for your total bill. An imperial meter they will multiply the units used by approx 33 not 11, so if you have a metric meter and find they have multiplied by 33 they ve messed it up.
Thats an easy way to spot it on your bill if they ve had a faulty meter exchange.
All the old meter details, and new meter start read, are on the yellow sticky label bottom of new meter.

All the figures are confirmed not estimates.

    Last years bills

    11 July 2015 to 6 Jan 2016 (180 days)
Total units used (100s of cubic feet) 133.
    Converted to 4202 kWh.

    7 Jan 2015 to 29 June 2015 (174 days)
Total units used (100s of cubic feet) 197
    Converted to kWh 6240

Haven't received a bill since but can confirm the following readings.

    30 June 2015 to 23 Nov 2015 (147 days)
60 units used (100s of cubic feet)
    Converted to about 1900 kWh.

23 Nov 2015 (date new meter was fitted) to 27 Jan 2016 (66 days)
    368 units used (metres cubed)
    Converted to about 4150 kWh

So in the last 66 days, since the new meter was fitted, I've almost used as many kWh as I did in the 6 months from July to January last year.

Let's just look at your data.from 07Jan15 to 06Jan16 (less the unaccounted for few summer days) you appear to have consumed gas at an average rate of about 2.6 cubic metre per day. This seems pretty low. From 23Nov15 to 27Jan16 you appear to have used about 5.6 cubic metre per day - not unreasonable in ratio to the annual 2.6 figure.

I don't think that you're going to build any sort of case on this data.

I assumed in my comparison that there was a typo in the above and it was actually 11 July 2014 to 6 Jan 2015.

As others have said, while your consumption has indeed gone up from last year, it is not high consumption for this time of year by any means. In fact I would call it average to low. I would also consider the following.

    1. We cannot be sure when your consumption increased as your meter readings are too far apart. The high use could have been over that whole period or it could have only been for the cold snap we had at the beginning of January (this then distorts the average for the whole period).

    2. You have not posted your meter readings and dates you took them for others to cross check (you have just posted your KWH calculations) . While I am sure your sums are correct, it can be useful for others to double check.

    3. Going forwards, I would start taking daily meter readings for a short periods to get a better idea as to what your average daily useage is. You can then adjust your boiler and room controls to make your daily use more efficient. I did this for short periods in summer, autum and winter. So now I know what is high and low use during these periods.

4.Over the long term take monthly meter readings. This enables you to monitor your use over the long term so you can compare monthly use, year on year.

P.S I just checked my monthly usage from last January and compared it to the same period this year. My average daily use has been 10% higher this January (probably to do with the cold snap early on).

However my 2015 December usage was 12% lower than my December 2014 use.

Is it possible that when they fitted the meter they caused a gas leak?

I say this as when they fitted a new water meter here they caused a water leak which took some time to manifest itself.
