Booked a lovely apartment in Portugal via tripadvisor.

The manager even allowed me to pay in full on arrival to avoid any bank charges

It's just another outlet for landlords to let their property, so from a property quality point of view, it's no different to the dozens of others and most properties will be found on all of them.
If you don't fancy TA, look for the same villa on a site you do like.
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

Just one thing to think about - booking via HL will be more expensive than booking direct - eg. my gite costs £725 peak season for a week - HL will charge you £810 - BUT you do get more protection https://www.holidaylettings.co.uk/content/payment-protection/

This means if you book via HL my gite & you turn up to find that the gite does not exist you should be able to get your money back.

  • booked a few villas through TA in the states. Found it to be one of the easiest to use, as you can see where it is on the map against other TripAdvisor reviewed attractions. Plus the guarantee seems to be a lot better than other sites.

Indeed - but you are paying quite a bit more for that.

I rent out using HL via TA as well as Homeaway.
All my clients seem to prefer the security that these sites bring and are happy to pay the premium for peace of mind, particularly those who wish to book flights up to 9 months in advance.
Most of my summer is booked up by the previous winter.
It's certainly handy for owners too as it gives us the option of varying how we wish payments to be made - I prefer 100% up front with a reasonable cancellation period.
That way there's no fannying about with tyre-kickers during my peak rental weeks.
