Discount for work over-running?

We recently bought a new house and had one company out to supply and fit flooring for the entire house (carpets/laminate and vinyls) which we agreed a price for of £3700.

They told us it would all be fitted on the Thursday and Friday. However we were notified on the Friday that they would not be able to finish as the carpet for stairs and landing had an issue and had to be reordered (it's unclear if they made a mistake or there was a fault with the carpet).

The stairs just had underlay and grippers (with nails sticking out which our daughter cut her foot on) until Tuesday, plus all internal doors were left off the hinges leaning up against walls which made it difficult to move all our furniture into place.

There was then one step left uncarpeted until the Friday as they did not have enough carpet. So overall the work was 1 week overdue for completion and they had to come in extra days which meant our cats had to be shut in the kitchen for those days (as they were not to go out until used to the new house).

We still have a balance due of £1700. Do you think it is reasonable to ask for a discount for this inconvenience and if so how much would be fair?

Thanks

    Nope!

!!!! happens.. very first world problems I'm afraid.

I you REALLY want to ask for a discount, then I would consider £50 should be the most you should ask for.

What does the contract say about over runs and payment terms?
Although a week might sound terrible to you - it's not a horrific delay by anyone's book, the company are likely to be making nothing as it is because they've had men there for a lot longer than they priced for.
I would put it down to experience this time tbh

Sometimes things go wrong and they're not the fault of the people you're dealing with - or if it is, they've taken responsibility immediately, taken on the cost of the mistake and told you they're fixing it. Is it worth penalising them?

The flip side of this story is that a company did their best for you and decided it was better to delay than put down substandard stuff.

    I think it's worth commending.
