Dropped kerb

Hello,
We have contacted our county council to extended our dropped kerb so we can widen our drive access to enable us to get our daughters cars onto our drive. We have been quoted £1379.86 for one dropping kerb and three dropped kerbs across 2.4 metres of footway (it is actually grass verge that we want dropping not pavement.) I knew it would be expensive but I didn't think it would be quite as much as that. Is this around the right price.
Thank you.

  • I remember when we were quoted £80 in the early 90,s . I expected it to be more expensive now
But not that much. I think it depends massively on your council /area but after reading your quote Im dreading calling mine !

It depends on the area therefore you can't really compare anything unless you let us know where you live. I've had clients in London that would pay nearly £3k for 2 meters of dropped kerb in Islington last year. Ask your neighbours if they had it done and how much they paid and use the info to haggle the price down if it was cheaper even if the job was carried out several years ago.
  • If you don't need permissions a good builder could do this for less than half the price of a council.
Let them use your electricity / toilet / provide tea and biscuits and you could get a good contact for future works.

You will need permission because the land comes under the control of the council.

Part of the cost that councils charge for this is a search of utilities under there and any strengthening that may be required to take a vehicle regularly driving over it.

  • Thank you for your replies. We are in North Nottinghamshire. We have to use council approved contractors if we don't use the council. I have contacted an approved company for a quote. It will take up to 12 weeks for the council to do the job, 6 weeks for paper work (utility searches) and up to 6 weeks form them to come and do it.

Contact 3 or more 'approved contractors' for a price comparison.

Seems a bit steep. I just paid £650 for 2m of dropped kerb. We already had 1m and it was being extended but the redid the whole kerb.
