Hi smithers1981
Absolutely. You can cancel the Direct Debit whenever you wish. Thought it might help if I give you a bit more information about what happens with a change of supplier. Once we receive the meter readings your new supplier will use to open their account, we'll close our account to the same readings and issue a final bill. This makes sure the same energy isn't charged twice. Any credit on the account at this stage will be automatically refunded.
One thing to be aware of is, if there's a live Direct Debit, the refund will be sent straight to your bank. If not, it'll be sent by cheque and this takes longer. Can take up to a couple of weeks longer depending on the circumstances. Also, customers with a Monthly Direct Debit pay lower daily standing charges. As soon as the arrangement is cancelled, standing charges will go up from then until the end of the account.
On the credit score you mention, we share with a Credit Reference Agency on a monthly basis. Cancelling the Direct Debit will only potentially have a negative impact if any debit balance is left unpaid for a length of time.
Sorry to lose you smithers1981 but hope this answers your question. Let me know if you need any more information as happy to help.
