building society savings for kids?

Hi, weve got a 2 week old and want to set up a respectable savings account for him. we plan to just put in 40 per month to start with a view to it eventually being a college/car fund when hes older. we'll probably dip into it for his next car seat when hes 18 months old but nothing much beyond this.
I dont really trust the banks any more and would prefer a building society account for him despite the fact that halifax has a 6% savings account for kids.
anyone come across a good building society account for kids with a high interest rate and easy access?
thanks
