Goldcar Rental - Reus Airport

Options
I'm looking at hiring a car for a holiday I'm going on to Spain in May. I will be landing at Reus airport and I have seen that Goldcar are offering a car for the week at only €28 for the size I want. I have seen the many bad reviews for these with the largest excesses for small scratches. Has anyone had any experience of them at this location. The rate is called the "Crazy Rate" and the fuel policy is full/full, I assume they will charge for a full tank then refund if i return it full?

Also I'm expecting a hard sell on their excess insurance. But if I get it from a third party will this cover me for any excess they charge me?. Even if I don't know how the damage was caused ?

Thanks for any replies.

    Dont do it!

Spend a few more Euro's and book with a reputable company, it will save you €100's in the long run

Yeah I am a bit unsure about them. But even if they charge me €100 on top for a tank of fuel it will still be half the price of hertz!. So that's why I'm considering them!.

    €28 is far too low.
You're bound to have hassles and extra unclear costs, can you be bothered?

and so why on earth are you still considering them???
Being half the price of Hertz is not difficult, there are many hirers to choose from.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....
  • Goldcar are a terrible company. Just do a search Trip Advisor for them. Most of the Spanish and Portuguese forums are littered with complaints about them. I'd avoid Hertz as well.

Go on to Trip Advisor and do a search for local car hire providers and see who people recommend in the destination you're travelling to. The local companies usually offer fare better value and customer service than the global ones.

If the quote states full/full you will only be charged if you return the car less than full, if you choose not to fill it up at the end of the rental, you will probably be charged at least double the true cost as it will include a service charge.

If you have CDW excess insurance from a 3rd party, Goldcar will charge you the excess and you will have to reclaim it from your own insurer in accordance with the policy terms, which may require a police report and other conditions. I've used 3rd party insurers for this but thankfully not had to claim so can't comment on how easy it is to claim.

I've used goldcar before and although they were just ok they did try a few little tricks, charging me a supplement for a diesel, trying to charge me the excess although my contract with carjet at the time had a zero excess, these were removed when I challenged them and the old full to empty trick made them a few €s with their inflated fuel charge.

They also had a clutch failure clause which was a new one on me. The 3rd party excess insurer stated they would not cover the cost of mechanical breakdowns.

I certainly would suggest that you click through and read Goldcar's T&C. Your head will spin from the myriad ways they can catch you out. Just be prepared.
  • We recently hired a car from this firm in Alicante. We will never use them again!
The car broke down after 3 days. They charged us for recovery. It broke down again. They arranged to tow it away and give us a replacement. The said they would organise a taxi to take us to the new car. On arriving we were charged for the recovery and the taxi which I thought they were providing. We could have made our own arrangements for transport had we realised this!
We then were charged for a tank of petrol a second time on a full for full policy.
On our return, despite returning the second car full, the first was picked up half full, we were not given any refund on either car.
All of this resulted in a loss of a day out of our holiday and has put us off renting a car again!

Thanks for all your replies. I've found a car hire insurance company that fully covers any damage and breakdowns, but I'm going to ring them to find out their claims procedure. I want to make sure I can claim for any costs without a police report.

I've also looked and it's cheaper for me to buy Goldcars own no excess insurance policy than to rent with the other companies, so that's an option.
