Unable to use address bar to search in Safari

Hi

This morning I'm finding that I can't use the address bar to search in Safari. I can use the favourite's bar to go to sites but if I try to type a word into the search box the word doesn't appear if that makes sense.

I have tried customising the tool bar-no joy. I switched the computer off then on again-nothing. I can use Chrome to browse but I want my search in Safari to work argghh.

Does anyone know how to sort this out?

I had the exact same problem this morning too! I got in contact with Apple who say they're working on an update to fix it. In the meantime, they told me to go into safari and turn off safari suggestions. This solved it for me. Another thing that worked was opening a new page (using the double page symbol) and pressing private for private browsing. It worked fine in this.
