Bank error in my favour.

I deposited 210 in cash yesterday in branch at the desk to a cashier, but discovered on going online later to shift money about that there was another payment of 214 also credited to my account, heavens know how. Now I know it's not my money and I haven't any silly notion to spend it but should I call up the branch to report it ( I cannot physically get there again till next Tuesday) or wait for them to reconcile their accounts in due course- they will obviously be looking for it as the books won't be balanced? So it'll be set right in time I'm certain- just not sure if the onus is on me to inform them, or let them correct their own mistake?

I would wait at least 10 days to 2 weeks, to allow the bank time to spot it and reverse it on their own.
Only if they don't after this time would I then report it.
Similar happened to me many years ago, I reported it on day 3 and they promptly took it back - twice! Once because I alerted them, and again because someone elsewhere in the bank had found the mistake. The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0 -
That's the kind of thing I was wondering about, sometimes seems as if no good deed goes unpunished doesn't it? I will wait as you say and if it doesn't get sorted by a week on Tuesday (my weekly jaunt to that town) I'll report it. Thanks for your help mgdavid0

Based on my own experience, I can say that it can take months for banks to catch up on an error they / their systems made, but catch up they do eventually. You can put the money aside until they ask for it back, or you can ask them to take it off you straight away.0

If it was cash then the cashier will have an error marked against them, if a till is short at the end of the day it's a right chew on as the cash has to be checked and re checked at a time when everyone is busy wanting to go home !
If you mention it when you are next in you will have one very grateful cashier:)

All sorted now, the banks processing unit identified the anomaly- I got a call about 30 mins ago asking me to confirm what I paid in and an online banking check shows the payment reversed and removed. Seems they're on the ball in that branch which is good. Thanks all for your input.0
