I have no particular loyalty to any utility company and will switch in a flash to get the best deal.

Currently in a contract with airtricity paying 14.74 pence per unit (includes VAT) new customers signing up now get it at 13.43p (includes vat) per unit, budget engery charges 13.74 p per unit.

Having got my latest bill I rang Airtricity on a few occasions, customer loyalty were supposed to call me back, never did, I rang again today and spoke to their customer service who then put me on hold, came back and said that loyalty dept would not speak to me directly because I was in contract, and I would have no option but to pay what I am paying until my contract was up

Ok granted I did sign up for a 10% discount on their standard, rate but I did consider it rather impolite for the loyalty team not to discuss it with me.

A bit of a bitter taste in the mouth to be paying more than new customers. If you are with Airtricity please check your bill as you might be paying more than you need to.

Thanks

  • I'm also with Airtricity and in the same position. I was fully aware I was entering a contract and thereby at risk of paying over the odds if prices fell.

I like the ability to submit a meter reading and keep track online of my usage and bills.

I've also just chosen to pay the gas through Airtricty (aware that Firmus are marginally cheaper). No issues here but then I generally try to avoid having to use the phone where online options exist.

I left Airtricity and went back to PowerNI. slightly more expensive, but they will answer the phone or an email, Airtricity totally ignored attempts to contact. I probably won't move again, better the devil you know.

I was previously an Airtricity customer using a keypad meter. At the time they were the cheapest when combined with the 1 year new customer discount. I phoned them at the end of the 1 year and the price increase after the discount ended was going to be quite considerable so I switched to another provider. They seemed to have no interest in negotiating the price or attempting to retain me as a customer.

Have never had any issues with their customer service, I've always been able to get through to them on the phone and they've been able to answer questions or resolve any issues I had very quickly

Fair point if you value customer service over price, however this is at the end of the day a money saving advice forum

Sometimes the cheapest option is not the best. Buy cheap, buy twice. We could save money by eating out of the neighbours bins, but, guess what, I ain't gonna do it!

If a company is giving you good all round service, it's not worth switching to save a small amount. Having said that, if you don't try different ones, you may miss out on something better and/or cheaper. Find which suits you best and stay with them but keep a weather eye on the others, things are liable to change.

I was in the same situation - introductory discount finished and was put on the regular rate. I phoned them, got put back on the introductory rate and got the £40 introductory credit that was available at that time even though I was already a customer.

And there is no ongoing contract so can change at any time. :j

No issues with customer service, etc. Can top-up online, submit meter readings etc. Been with them a few years now.

Thanks to this thread I rang Airtricity today. Been with them almost 5 years, first two on introductory pricing. Didn't realize if you rang them up they'll put you back on a new contract as long as you use ebilling and direct debit (which we do anyway) and £30 into account into the bargain. Can't be bad to that. So thanks again.
