HMRC have sent me another UTR

Options
I've been doing on line self assessment (SA) for years now, but in December I got a letter saying HMRC had set up a self assessment record for me because I'll need to pay National Insurance Contributions using SA. Then they wrote to me with a new UTR, which bears no resemblance to the one I've been using. It says this UTR is "for life" so what was the other one for?

I rang the help line and they were none the wiser.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? Any idea what I should do?

Usually only receive a new UTR if you were made bankrupt.
  • Thank you. Yes I read that on line somewhere. But I haven't been declared bankrupt and I've been self employed continuously.

Just ask them to make the wrong one dormant.
  • I will try that once the dust has setted after the self assessment rush. Thanks.

I'm still curious as to whether this has happened to anyone else.
  • same happened to me. I am definitely calling them again these days as it's very weird.

Looks like a glitch in the system with the change to Class 2 contributions being charged through SA.

It is, it'sactually been going on a for the past 2months or so.

One thing that seemsto be common in most (but not all) of these cases is that either the NationalInsurance number (NINO) is not linked at all to the originalrecord and so the systemsets up a new record believeing that as there is no NINO traced then the person is not in SA.

    OR

The person has a temporary NINO linked to their self assessment account and sothe systemagain doesn't recognise that a person with their NINO is in the system and set up a record.

There is no problem and it's an easy fix. Give the helpline a call and provide both numbers. The call waiting times are much lower now than in previous months. The adviser on theother end should make the newest record dormant and update the existing record to ensure allthe necessary signals are set.
