Maybe I should have added assuming the cost is the same.

I checked a few dates leaving on a monday and going out on the early flight is actually cheaper than the late flight (both coming back at same time)

Makes sense to me and like the poster above says its a package cost not X nights in a hotel

You can also see the flight times etc when booking online so if not happy dont book, DIY is possibly cheaper anyway

It it's a 10 night holiday it doesn't automatically follow that it's 10 nights in a hotel. Without flight times, and which holiday he's booked there's not really enough info to go on.

I'm waiting for the flight times and haven't yet seen the brochure and description.
But I certainly would not accept checking in to my hotel on, for example, the 10th at normal check in time, but being debited for the 9th....the reason given that I was in the air for the first night. That would be classed as hogwash.
I agree that if they were on the morning flight and arrived at 3.35am, that would be counted as the first night. But not if they arrive at check in time the next day. Then it is nine nights and no argument about the first night being in the air.. That is rubbish.

Normal check in time in some hotels is getting later, with some it is 5pm.

If the tour operator does deals with hotels such as this and has flights that arrive at say 11am and 1pm, then it's just easier for them to let their passengers check in early and the night in the air to be the first night.

But as we have said, it's a package so he hasn't been debited for any number of nights in a hotel. If he had booked all the elements separately and it showed 10nts hotel accomm and he didn't check in until lunch then yes it would be hogwash.

However he has booked a 10nt package which is what he is getting, he departs on one date and is away for 10 nights regardless of where he flies / sleeps! As I said previously, if he doesn't arrive until lunch time then the chances are that Virgin have only paid, and charged him as part of the package for 9 nights accom with the other night being his flight.
