Collected damaged bed - what are my rights?

So...I bought a bed frame from a local furniture shop where I used to live which is about 200 miles from where I now live. I hired a van to collect the item with the shop assistants loading it in the back for me. However, upon unwrapping the bed I discovered it was damaged. I informed the shop and they said they could repair it. But, I didn't purchase a brand new bed to receive it damaged then repaired. They asked if I could return it and I said no as I couldn't afford the van hire. They then said they could collect but as it was such a distance it would take some time and I won't get my money back until they receive it back (They have previously stated they are able to travel to my location as they were trying to get me to agree to delivery at the time or ordering). This was some weeks ago now and I've heard nothing from them. Can I phone and demand they collect the bed and refund my money ASAP? Or am I responsible for returning it?

If you originally collected it from the shop then you would have to return it if you wanted a refund or replacement. However they have already offered to collect it-but on what terms-at your expense?
Why won't you accept a repair, if it will be as good as the original?

    Hi. Welcome to the forums.

    A couple of questions:
Did you make the purchase in their shop?
How did you pay? Hopefully by card - if so, a debit card or credit card?
When did you buy the thing? What date?

is it possible the bed was damaged during transit?

You are responsible for returning the bed back to the place that you collected it from and provided that it wasn't damaged after you collected it, you are entitled to a full refund. This must be paid with 14 days of the retailer agreeing that you are entitled to such a refund.
  • Why do some consumers make such a song-and-dance about things? It seems they want to move Heaven and Earth to resolve minor problems.

It sounds like the bed had a minor fault which the retailer has offered to fix.

Instead of being picky about wanting the whole thing removed and replaced, why not just have it repaired?

It would be simpler and quicker.

Some people find the most minor blemishes and marks and demand a whole new item when usually, the same marks and scuffs will appear anyway during normal use.

Just accept a repair or, if it is just a minor scratch or scuff, just live with it. Nothing in life is 100 percent perfect, and if you can still use it as a bed, then stop complaining!
