i have recently been turned down for car finance so decided to get mt credit files so got the free trial from equifax and that was showing 440 out of 600 which is good and not far off excellent. then got the free trial from experian and that says my credit score is 640 out of 999 which is a poor score. why are these 2 credit reference agencies so different?

It's what's on your reports that matters. Not who holds what data or the (irrelevant) score they show you. Lenders don't use the scores they use the data.0
