I think the main difficulty will be potential boredom when suffering long speeches, or waiting for the meal to be served. But distracting them with colouring books and Peppa Pig on an iPad should do the trick. I also wouldn't be worried about having somebody take the child outside for a bit, and you can rotate around who gets to do this.

My son went to two weddings when he was two, and one of these was my brothers. I did have to take him out during the speeches, but he behaved well enough. I can't say the same for the little darlings who thought it would be fun to crawl around under the top table during the speeches though...

There is also the point that if the wedding couple didn't expect a child to cause a bit of a noise and be noticed periodically they wouldn't invite them in the first place!

Peppa Pig playing during the speeches would annoy me more.. jigsaws and colouring at that point I think!

I just had my 4 year old on reins.. little beast tried throwing herself under a lorry.. again.. that was the last straw for my nerves.. she had already run off several times and fallen off a wall. I hate school runs! She doesn't even object to the reins .. we have the backpack sort with a lead on.. but she has worn them since she could walk.

That will be the parents of said little darlings being unable to control children at a wedding.

When my daughter was little she had a church bag to keep her occupied during the service.
In it I had colouring book and pencils (make less mess than felt tips and crayons), small cuddly toy, jigsaw and little tubs of grapes, raisins, bread sticks, etc.
I know some one above suggested chocolate raisins, but I don't recommend that. Chocolate is very messy in the hands of a toddler. If you must have chocolate, white chocolate doesn't show up as much on clothes and skin :)

Lots of little things keeps them entertained better, as their attention span is naff.
Also if he is going to run around at all, then take off his shoes as it's quieter.

The problem I have with that mindset is this - during the planning of a wedding it's fair to suggest that some people become idiots who seemingly forget the most basic of things. When you have all that jazz to organise it's easy to forget something so simple as which friends do or do not have halflings.

With that though also comes one simple question, does the wedding invite cover said child in the first place? Bearing in mind that if the invite expressly states Mr & Mrs Smith instead of Mr & Mrs Smith & Baby Smith then it's unfair to assume that the invite is extended to the child.

As for how to appease the child, no earthly idea, given my stance towards children that's hardly unsurprising.

You're right and to be honest (although probably didn't explain it that well) it's not the child I'm worried about or even a bit of noise it's the adults!!:rotfl:

Posters have come up with some great suggestions and if the 'babysitting' was shared around all would be fine but I don't want his grandparents seeing it as their role on the day to devote all their time to him. Having a few distractions on hand will mean he's at least happy to spend some time with me.

Unless they have a close and special relationship with the 2 year old, the 2 year old would only be invited because the parents will be there and they didn't want to exclude/ upset/ annoy the parents. I imagine they would expect the considerate parents to behave responsibly and keep the 2 year old in check at appropriate points in the events.
