I don't expect everyone to have sugar free if they do great I'll accept their offer.

All mine are sugar free. Fizzy or still, all sugar free.
I begrudge "wasting" calories on a drink when I could spend them on something more tangible.

  • Hiya All

I carry - ordinary tea;coffee - real and plastic; sometimes cordial which can be made up with water. For years I have been on a small income. Each weekend I would make up a giant batch of spag bol/chicken thigh curry/ chilli con carne/giant sausage plait. All of my son's mates would come round and know that they were welcome to some of this and bread for toast and range of 3 spreads. Sometimes I made American Pancakes for Sunday breakfast.

All were welcome and still are - but if you dont like what I provide then bring your own. Please respect my house - so shoes off when going upstairs. Dog free sofa was for those who were fussy about dog hairs (she was allowed on one sofa but not the other and she knew it!)
That said - if knew/know someone was coming I would obviously accommodate their likes - for example one friend does not like fruit cake so when she is coming I make chocolate or lemon dirzzle. Another friend cannot drink cow's milk so I have almond milk in.
At the end of the day surely its about the welcome, the chat, the download of problems not the catering???? :A

I seriously question your judgment in friends :p

Discrimination is unpleasant, we must be accepting of all. It starts with cakes and where will it end? :D

Good for Ilona. However, many of her savings is because she shops late and has access to cheap goods. I live in small town, shops here are expensive and nearest supermarket is 10 miles away. Once I started a thread about moneysaving in rural area. To be honest, there weren't many good ideas , other then grow your on veg and invest in big freezer. Moneysaving is great thing, but not everyone can to it to the level applauded here.

thinking about it - I can easily stretch Sunday lunch intended for 4 people to many more...............use my food slicer for the joint (its incredible how many slices you can get by using one of these versus an ordinary carving knife), putting on a few more spud and doing a few more veg. I think the most I have done was 9 or 10 and it could only have cost pennies more than the lunch I had originally planned.
(anyone else have family that regularly invite themselves to Sunday lunch at short notice?)

Meritaten - I have one of those electric food slicers from Lakeland and it must have paid for itself many times over. I've had a gammon joint in the SC overnight and, using the very thin setting, now have enough 'wafer-thin ham' for sandwiches next week, plus enough 'thicker-cut' for dinner tonight (with roast potatoes and cauliflower cheese) plus some to freeze - all for £3. Plus, the stock left behind in the SC, which included some carrots and celery, has been whizzed in the blender and had some cream and paprika added and been served for lunch as a very tasty soup.:T

I'm in the "Make guests feel welcome" school of thought - so I do keep in drinks I don't use myself (ie tea and instant coffee). So they are there in the cupboard - along with my own real coffee and fruit teas.

To me - its part of what you do - ie having in their choice of refreshments and keeping the house warm/comfortable/etc enough. I would tend to assume people would be put off visiting me if I didn't do so. I know I find it offputting visiting houses where there is nothing to drink/I'm cold/fur-shedding animals are allowed to sit on seats humans will want to sit on. I would feel bad at sending away guests thirsty, cold and covered in animal hair.

Must admit I've not forgotten a meal many years back in the house of a friends parents - where the main course had been a bit on the "flimsy" side and her mother turned round and said "Oh - DO people want pudding?". Fortunately - her own husband responded with "Of course they do".
If you know the house has animals isn't it to be expected that you would leave covered in hair? I do whatever I can to stop guests being hairy but I must admit, it is pretty futile. :o

I always ask if the house owner wishes me to take my shoes off before entering

Why would you want outside dirt traipsed through your house?

Because it only takes a minute to clean, and it is better than making your guest uncomfortable, in my view. But as you say, asking the host makes it easier for everyone.
