  • Well done NewShadow its surprising what can be found with a bit of foraging isn't it. I found I have saved so much by literally cutting back and searching out the bargains .

Those Y/S veg are a brilliant bargain, more power to your elbow honey I love it when folk find stuff like that.Definitely save more by only using cash as you are less likely to'splurge' :):).

Its really going back to when I was first married in 1962 and payday came once a week, and once the purse was empty, then that was it until the next payday. So easy when you have a debit or credit card to overspend, as it doesn't feel like 'real' money. I keep my food budget cash apart from my 'happy cash stash' that way I don't spend too much, and if I fancy a treat its not come from my food budget. My budget purse is firmly closed at the moment and I have nothing to buy.I too have full cupboards and if I want a treat of a cake then I will bake one,but often the inclination has passed ,whereas if I was in a supermarket, I would have at one time thought nothing of throwing something in the trolley :):):)

Far older, and more sensible now :):):)

Hello everyone I've just listen to Ilona on Radio 2 from Wednesday. I've also totted up my spend for this month. It's a grand total of £44.54 plus £38 in vouchers so I managed to get £38 worth of food for free. Next week I will need milk and bread, I will go tomorrow night and hopefully get YS bread. I think that will be it for this month, so just about another £4 spend as I get milk 12 pints at a time.
Why pay full price when you may get it YS ;)

I had to shop on Thursday for bits and Bob's to last me until the end of the month. Under a fiver for food...:T

    Brussels Pate`
    Whole grain and Rye bread.
    Scotch eggs x2
YS pk muffins x 4 (treat)

Today I spent £1.29 on stationary, hopefully that will be it as I have food in the freezer and will be eating at my friends house two days this week.
I would like to buy some more sports gear but I'm holding back until I can really look for a bargain. :)
I feel like I'm racing around again trying to fit everything in. I must slow down and take stock and breathe!:A

I need to sleep, obviously - I was thinking you were eating pens then...
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

My local supermarket (T) does take everything out the back, and to be honest, I think that makes the situation worse! Everyone crowds them when they bring the food back out and scrambles for it. In the one I went to yesterday (A) they were reducing it in the aisle and it was much better because everyone could see it and took what they wanted as it got reduced, rather than fighting over it when it came out.

I think either way works as long as people are considerate. Most of the supermarkets near me are very civilised, but in one of them people will actually fight.
It is in an area with lots of desperate people though, I think. :(

I dont know if this is true or not, but the boy putting the 6p stickers on loaves on Saturday said that from next week Tesco is not doing YS any more, and that the food will go to charities that apply for it.

Re YS when I used to end up near a little co-op the staff used to get v annoyed with a couple who came every day at YS time. They were physicaly big people and would elbow their way in front of everyone and grab masses. The staff knew from overhearing their conversations that a) there were only the two of them b) their freezers were full c) that they often said that they ended up throwing stuff out cos they couldnt eat it all. I found out because someone complained and asked why the manager didnt kick them out. the staff were v sympathetic but felt they could do nothing. I felt sorry for the staff.

Its the same as picking blackberries - you always leave some for other people and the birds.

If T does decide to only give to charities I can see that it would save their staff loads of grief.

  • We used to go of an evening a few times a week to our local T*sco to pick up YS, mainly veg, since we have 3 vegan teens we go through a vast amount. It was a nice little group who all knew each other and were all polite and considerate. OH who is tall and athletic would pass/reach stuff for the little old ladies, and 1 particular woman who was always after gluten free bread, but whose eyesight was poor - I would just pass it to her. Everyone was happy, even the staff. Then a woman started coming who ruined it for everyone. She used her crutches to block everyone else, would snatch everything and throw it in her trolley. I would see her arriving and she would race across the car park carrying her crutches, and only use them once in position so I am not sure she was actually disabled, just using them as a prop, everyone was concerned about hurting her to kept well away. When she snatched at a bag of oranges in my hands, sending them rolling across the floor, I decided she was welcome to it. We don't go anymore and settled for A*di super 6 veg and M*rrisons reduced bread, where the crowd is better behaved. :T
No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!

I do hope honeyTW you are misinformed re the YS being withdrawn in Tesco. I rely on getting a few things each week to make my housekeeping go round. On basic OAP life is difficult enough but without this help it will make it worse AND they say the council tax is going up. More belt tightening ! jac.xx

It could be that the lady with the crutches is ok walking for the first few minutes.
I have a back condition, and anybody seeing me leave the house trotting along like a mountain goat would never suspect anything was wrong, but it only takes a few minutes before walking is difficult.

I hope he got the wrong end of the stick too. It will make a big difference to us because we need gluten free things, and at three pounds a loaf it is expensive, yet is often reduced.

I have always thought that the YS reductions were to get people in the store at less busy times and who wouldn't go otherwise?
I know that only a small amount of the days waste is put on sale.
