Hi OP (bear with the photobucket novice here!)
I'd second the stand idea if you can find one as they can look really cool and you wouldn't have to worry about supporting heavy cakes on top of light ones. I've also found that it means you can use softer cake types instead of harder sponges, but that depends on what you're after. This is my little sisters cake (mum made it, I iced it) on an off-set stand.
Or you could put them side by side. This is one I iced for a friends wedding - they wanted a very large chocolate cake and the two small fruit cakes at the front were the same size, so tiering would have been hard.
Following on from this you can also raise one at the back of the table on a block, throw a table cloth over the block then mount the cakes that way to give the illusion of different heights without having to stack them. cel x:staradmin:starmod: beware of geeks bearing .gifs...:starmod::staradmin:starmod: Whoever said "nothing is impossible" obviously never tried to nail jelly to a tree :starmod:0 -
so the question is?.. can you stack 3 sponge tiers? or is it a MUST to have a bottom Fruit Cake?
I was looking to order a 3 tier sponge from M&S
Thanx0 -
Yes you can stack 3 sponge cakes together. Aslong as the cake has atleast 3 dowels inserted in equal places it should hold the weight. You don't always have to have fruit at the bottom. But If you are having fruit and sponge layers it's always wise to place the fruit on the bottom.
Also when you use dowels, never use wooden ones as they have been treated with something and cause food poisoning. There are special cake dowels that you can get which are plastic ones. What's yours is mine and what's mine is mine..0 -
Thank you for reply... I have 8 cake pillars with the dowels that a friend has given me(unused).
I was just concern of the weight and how stable the cake would be too.

Just make sure the cake pillars are spaced evenly apart and not all too close to the center so it doesn't sink. Also, my teacher told me make sure the dowel goes through to the bottom and in the middle of the pillar for extra support. What's yours is mine and what's mine is mine..0
