Hello all
I am looking for some help please,
I am trying to find the absolute cheapest way with wedding cakes. at the moment the cheapest way is m&s wedding cakes.
My question is...
can i have a large sponge base, followed by a medium sponge tier and then a small fruit cake tier?
would it be easy enough to assemble?
would the weight of the top layers cave the bottom sponge in?
Thanks
Sylvia

Fruit cake is very heavy. They say you shouldnt stack fruit on top of sponge as it wouldnt hold the weight and I think that even the small tier could be too heavy, and prob not worth the risk.
If you dont want a lot of fruit cake you would prob be best to just get the three tiers of sponge, which doesnt come in small so its £60 total for med, large and extra large and then get a bar of fruit cutting cake. I cant find pics on the site of it but its on the order form so they deffo still do it. Its basically just a cake bar made exactly the same as the wedding cake but much cheaper as its just rectangular. Its only £10 for 1.36kg and the small wedding cake is £7.99 for 600grams so you get much more for your money too and nobody need know what shape it was before it was cut.
So total for that lot would be £70 which isnt bad at all really. I know you were looking at about £40 for the large and medium sponge with the small fruit top tier but £70 is still a pretty good price.
Or if you dont mind fruit cake and were just picking sponge cause its cheaper then another way to do it would be to get the set of three fruit layers, large, medium and small for £49.50 and buy a couple of the sponge cutting cakes for £8 each.
Ooh all this cake talk is making me hungry lol!

Some florists who also sell with cake decorating items, etc. and have the basis of making your own favours etc sometimes hire out cake stands. You can get slightly offset ones in three tiers which helps with assembling a cake such as you wish to have from M & S. This eliminates the need for pillars as even the M & S food ordering guide says in the section on wedding cakes that you cannot stack two tiers of sponge and one tier of fruitcake. This is exactly what my daughter is doing for her wedding cake in December.
Hope this helps0 -
if you want to stack sponge cakes you need to dowel them to hold the weight of the cake aboveTrying to get on top of finances one step at a time0

Why don't you use a step stand......

that way you can put anything you like on it as weight is not an issue

Sorry - just realised Lavendergirl has posted the same idea......0 -
I agree that you shouldnt have the fruit on top of the sponge cakes it will be too heavy the sponge cakes probably would not hold the weight even if you used dowl and cake pillars. A three tier cake stand is a good idea. I bought my wedding cakes from Asda and they were brill I used dowling and cake pillars bought wide ribbon and wrapped it round the edge of each tier and then bought some sugar flowers on top of each tier.0

if cakes are doweled correctly yes they will supprt the weight, but its not to be advised tbh it just is more logical to have the fruit cake at the bottomTrying to get on top of finances one step at a time0

You also need to think how many you are wanting to cater for. Remember you get less portions from a sponge than you do a rich fruit cake. Hence the idea to have the fruit cake at the bottom is also because it is the largest tier and therefore more cost efficient.
A kitchen cake (fruit or genoese) is common now as most bride's want more genoese/maderia/sponge than fruit. Hence a square of fruit cake marzipanned and sugarpasted without any decoration on is ideal.0 -
How much were the cakes from asda?
Thanks
