Changed Supplier, But Supplier Not Supplying

Options
We were with OVO energy until November, when I switched online to British Gas.
I got the final meter request from OVO, paid the bill and they sent me any credit back to my bank account. All good so far.

However, British Gas have still not written to me, or anything. When I log in to my acccount online, all it says is 1. Confirming your order - There are four steps in your order with British Gas, which can take around 2 and a half weeks to complete.

It's been like this since the end of November.

Should I just wait longer, or contact them?

    1. Ensure you are putting money aside for your usage, especially for the winter. You may owe whoever picks up the supply.

    2. You may indeed want to contact British Gas to clarify the problem in taking over the supply.....however, see below.

    3. Why exactly are you switiching to British Gas? None of their tariffs are particlarly competative at the moment. I appreciate that one of the tariffs ( the November one maybe), for a brief period was cheapest. That certainly is not the case now.

    4. Forth option is to forget British Gas, do a new comparison and sign up with the current cheapest tariff.

    ......Ovo look pretty good.....:)

For the amount of gas and electric I use, British Gas were about the same price for me as OVO, but offered a £50 Amazon voucher. With the higher fuel prices it still put me around £40 up, plus without a contract I can leave whenever I want.

Really? What was the tariff you were switching to and the actual pence per KWH for your area?
  • steve2005
    Options
Electricity Unit rate 12.358p per kWh
    Standing charge 26.01p per day

Gas Unit rate 3.875p per kWh
    Standing charge 26.01p per day

    OVO was
Electricity Unit rate 11.970p per kWh (cheaper)
Standing charge 28.77p per day (more expensive)

Gas Unit rate 2.583p per kWh (Cheaper)
Standing charge 28.77p per day (more expensive)

The standing charge did it for us, as we spend a lot of time out of the UK, so don't want to pay for when we're not here

I appreciate the standing charge scenario.

Prices have dropped a lot since you initiated the switch.

    Ovo current (my area)
    Electric 10.880p per KWH

    Gas 2.430p per KWH

    Standing Charge 28.77p per day.

A comparison site takes into account the cost of the standing charge. So if you compare using your actual annual usage (even if low) it will give you the cheapest taking the standing charge into account.

If we compare use low KWH usage of:

    2500KWH electric

    8000KWH Gas

The cheapest tariff froma big six company (Eon) is nearly £308 cheaper than the "British Gas Nov Fix and Fall" and the same amount cheaper than the current fix and reward.

    EON

    Electric 9.66 pence per KWH

    Gas 2.686 pence per KWH

Standing charge 16.42 Electric and 21.9 Gas

Correct to my area of course...

    That is interesting.
The British Gas has no 'tie-in' period, so once it's all set up and I get my Amazon voucher, I'll do another comparison.

Sounds as if your switch has gone badly wrong. Normally the losing supplier (OVO) would not ask you for final readings -they would get them from the gaining supplier (BG) via the standard industry verification routes. They certainly wouldn't refund you otherwise.Sounds more like an interim bill and they have returned the excess credit.
Have you actually given BG any start readings ???

Looks like this Switch has gone adrift somewhere

Best to Google "Who supplies my Gas & Electricity"
This will give you the phone number of the National Data Base for Gas meters, who will tell you who is registered as the supplier of your gas
The data base for Elec meters is regional, so the one for your area will tell you who is registered as your Elec supplier
