Breakdown Cover - Crazy!
Last year I had cover with Kwikfit £29.80. Last week they phoned to remind me that it was coming up for renewal and they quoted me £54+. I said I'd think about it and I would get some quotes to compare.
Yesterday I received a letter from Kwikfit offering me a renewal for a few pence short of £100!
I've just gone on a couple of comparison sites and found a company called 2together £26.50, and there are several others that come in at under £30. Some I've heard of, others I haven't, but all offer the same cover that I require.
These are the companies, and I'd appreciate knowing if I should specifically avoid any of them or indeed is there really any difference:

I would stick to the main ones, no point getting cheap if the product does not fit the bill.
What do you require from the cover?
Their cheapest cover takes you to the nearest garage.
I dont like companies that register a load of website either. Their address appears to be absent?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

I've been with StartRescue for a few years now paying less than £20 each year. Like you I thought they were too good to be true but they are top class, the few times i've broken down, help has arrived within 40 mins (even in the remote Highlands) and they do a very nifty iOS/Android app.0 -
I'm with Brittania Rescue and they brought us home from Scotland when I broke down on the last day of holiday. Can't say if they are the cheapest but give us peace of mind.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

All the recovery companies big or small offer the same level of cover depending on what you choose- at home, recovery, onward travel, european cover, hire car etc etc.
The only major difference between the big companies and the cheap ones is that aa/rac will attempt to repair your vehicle if they can.
I once had a dodgy mondeo and the fuel cut off switch kept stopping the car midway through driving- not very nice at 60mph!. The garages didn't want to touch it/charge me a fortune for it. Broke down once in the city centre, rac came out, rewired the switch and soldered into the fuse board at the road side , never had a problem again
Companies like start rescue are just a call centre, when you break down they call the job up to various local recovery companies who then get the job and they are just that- a recovery company.
I've had start rescue for a number of years and broken down countless times in my previous vehicles. They never quibble about towing you to a garage or home, they once towed us 250 miles home.
Saying that, they aren't mechanics and there's only been a couple of occasions when i could drive away after calling them eg.battery gone
Its your choice but personally i now go for the cheaper optionEven a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day, and for once I'm inclined to believe Withnail is right. We are indeed drifting into the arena of the unwell.0 -

Thanks, yes I'll probably go with Start, although on Compare the Market the quote is £28.79 but when I click through to the next page, i.e. "Go to Provider" and without entering any further details, it suddenly jumps to £35.45, not a great deal but on my little Aygo it represents nearly a quarter tank of petrol:)
Rescue my Car is £31.50
2together is £26.500 -
I looked at the 2gether breakdown cover and although I found it the most competitive the reviews I found on the net were not very good from those who actually had a breakdown and tried to claim for help. Ended up paying £60 to go through my car insurance.0

Thank you. I have signed up with Start. I did get free legal cover thrown in so quite satisfied with that, oh and 15.75% cashback.0
