How to completely factory erase a Hudl v1?

I have been given a Hudl (v1, not v2) which was used by a child. Somehow it become infected with a virus or adware and nothing I have tried so far seems to shift whatever is on it. I have tried restore to factory defaults via the settings menu, using the volume up/power menu to erase and restore user data and the cache. But, alas, nothing works!

When I try to get past the welcome screens and enter your Google account details, I am constantly bombarded with adverts and pop ups - this is making it very painful to do anything with the tablet.

I would really appreciate any advice. I have considered reflashing the ROM, if this is possible, but I don't want the device unrooted.

I can perform all the steps fine and the device seems to do as it's told - except the erasing part is very quick, even from the settings menu. The page you linked me to seems to imply that it can take up to 10 minutes.

I don't know if I can call it progress, but I've managed to install Malwarebytes and AVG - neither of which can remove the adware. AVG's reason is "this app was pre-installed by your phone vendor and we cannot remove it". This message applies to the following malware threats found with AVG:
    • com.android.systemUI
    • com.android.h5play
    • Super Video Downloader
    • bcgservice
    • PacProcessor
AVG also warns me of an unsecure setting: "Unsecure privilege mode detected. Your device is running in High Privilege mode (i.e., it has been rooted). We recommend using only genuine firmware. For more info, please see our FAQs".

Completely flummoxed on what to try next. :wall:

(Sorry in advance if none of this applies to Hudl 1)

Just did a bit of googling and arrived here

    https://www.tescotechsupport.com/feature/how-to-avoid-android-malware-on-your-hudl-2/

I know it says hudl 2 but it does mention something called

    BitDefender Clueful Privacy Advisor

I just looked on Play Store and there are a few Bit Defender products so perhaps either the one mentioned above or one of the other ones might help. Their Mobile Security and Anti Virus might be useful and can do a manual scan for malware, it says. Also it has a 14 day free trial (useless if trial doesn't allow manual scan)

  • If it's stuff installed at the factory, it'll be tied to the launcher.

I got rid of all the factory installed Tesco bloatware, on my Hudl 2, by installing a different launcher.

How do you do that? I'd love to get rid of the bloatware on my Hudl v1.

I've tried various scanners to try and remove the adware/viruses, but nothing seems to work unless I have root access. I am not even slightly familiar with rooting Android device - nor am I sure I want to grant root access on child's device, therefore I would want to unroot the device after I have finished.

I'm not really sure what to do, or how to go about it. Root, remove rubbish and unroot? Or reflash? Neither of which I know how to do.

to see if its a virus on the restore or a faulty google app (that you have loaded) , do another clean reset and log in with another gmail address

or even skip the log in and connect by wifi

this will tell you which of the above it is
